Business and Professional Communication
Prerequisites
Graduate standing and admission into a graduate business program.
Description
Development of skills to assist managers to communicate to both internal and external audiences,
to conduct meetings, to negotiate, and to resolve conflict. Emphasis is placed on oral and written
presentation skills using state-of-the-art technologies and presentation software.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Correctly select, plan, and compose letters, resumes, memoranda, and reports.
2. Plan and deliver a well-organized and professional oral presentation.
3. Lead and participate effectively in business collaboration sessions with peers, including
meetings.
4. Describe major concepts, theories, and methodologies for developing effective
communication strategies.
5. Identify and discuss essential intercultural factors affecting business communication.
6. Select and employ strategies for communicating effectively in negotiation and conflict
situations at work.
7. Explain major technological, global, and cross-cultural trends and their effects on
communication.
Purpose
To introduce all aspects of written and oral communication applicable to the business world.
Both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in business communication are included as
part of instruction. Mastery of theoretical concepts and the development of professionalism in
all types of organizational interaction are stressed.
Master Syllabi are developed by the senior faculty in each business discipline. This Master Syllabus must be used as the basis for developing the
instructor syllabus for this course, which must also comply with the content specifications outlined in the Troy University Faculty Handbook.
The objectives included on this Master Syllabus must be included among the objectives on the instructor’s syllabus, which may expand upon the
same as the instructor sees fit. The statement of purpose seeks to position the course properly within the curriculum and should be consulted by
faculty as a source of advisement guidance. Specific choice of text and other details are further subject to Program Coordinator guidance.
