Exercise 7: Appraisal Interview Analysis Manager = M Employee = E M: Hi, Chris. Welcome. Please sit down. E: Thank you. M: As you know, this is the regularly scheduled performance appraisal that I conduct with each employee. The purpose of this talk is to review your performance during the past year. Actually, there should be few surprises because I’ve tried to keep you informed throughout the year. You’ve read over my report, I assume, so I want to spend our time discussing some critical areas and answer any of your questions. E: Fine, that sounds good because I do have some questions. M: I’d like to start with the positive areas. Let me just list the areas of your greatest strengths: 1. You seem to be able to handle the cash drawer without assistance or errors. 2. You have the ability to explain savings services effectively to customers. 3. Your general attitude toward the job is quite positive. In general, I’m impressed with your abilities after being here only 9 months. E: Well thanks, I’ve really tried hard. I enjoy working here and that really helps. My co-workers are really a joy to work with--they make it easy. M: Now, I’d like to explore with you 3 areas of improvement. First, I’ve rated you average in organizational abilities. At times, you seem unorganized. E: Well, I just try to do so much...sometimes I don’t take time to keep things organized. I mean I try to keep my papers straight and stuff, but my priority is on customer service. Comments: Comments: M: Oh, but I still think some improvement is needed here. E: I’ve always had this problem and frankly, it seems more important to serve customer needs. M: Secondly, I’d like to see some improvement in the area of cross-selling. We set a goal of cross-selling 7 NOW accounts. You actually sold 5 NOW accounts. I’d like to see that up to par next year. You know this a high priority in the business. E: I know I’ve kind of failed in that area, but sometimes it’s so hard--I feel kind of awkward mentioning it--I just try to be friendly--I don’t want to offend the customer--I feel like I really service the customer effectively. M: Well, you do, but I’d still like to see more cross-selling. The third area is bringing in new customers. We set a goal of 10 new customers--I have only 5 new customers credited to your efforts this year. E: You know that goal is practically impossible--all my friends already bank here--and I just don’t know what to do. M: I understand. This isn’t really criticism. Overall you’re doing a fine job--I want to emphasize that! For only being here 9 months, I’m impressed, really! E: So you think I’m doing a good job? M: Yes, basically yes. You are making progress, I’m pleased. Do you have any questions? E: No, it’s basically what I expected. I mean you always tell me I’m doing a good job. M: Well, there are some areas of improvement. E: Yes, I know, but basically, I’m doing a good job. I mean I like my job and the people I’m working with. Is that all? M: Yes, I guess so, except I need you to sign this form. Questions: 1. Was this interview effective? Fully explain your criteria for effectiveness. Be specific in your explanation by showing your proof. 2. What specific suggestions would you make for the EE? 3. What will be the most likely future results of this interview?
