On November 13, 1998, Apple Daily and Ming Pao carried a news article about a movie star, Chu
Yan, Athena. The headline in Ming Pao was ‘Chu Yan holding virgin concert for computer
advertiser’. The article was built around her career, the computer advertiser and the concert. It
analyzed why she was chosen and how the concert might help her singing career. The item was
supplemented by a photo of her with a notebook computer. The headline in Apple Daily was ‘Chu
Yan courted by computer advertiser’. The article briefly mentioned the computer advertiser but
speculated in length on the probability of her boy friend, Paul Wong, attending the concert. The
item showed Chu Yan in a mini-skirt. What a difference between a newspaper for the masses and
one for the educated!
Ming Pao is a full-ranged newspaper for the educated. It strikes a serious note for readers of
“higher preferences”. It is a newspaper which the masses do not appreciate, let alone understand it.
Newspapers like Apple Daily however appeal to the majority who might become more ‘informed’
in the process.
