Application:

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department advises schools to
appoint a staff responsible for the co-ordination of the anti-mosquito
program. You can refer to “Prevention of Dengue Fever (Advice to
Schools)” in the website of the Food and Environmental Hygiene
Department at:

Extension:

To enhance students' awareness of mosquito prevention at home, it is
recommended that schools use the Worksheet (Annex VI) for the
follow-up activity, in which students are required to complete the
assignment with parents, and check whether there is stagnant water at
home, teaching parents knowledge on mosquito prevention.

(News) The Food and Environmental
Hygiene Department confirmed that the
two cases of dengue fever recently
discovered are local infection. Although
Hong Kong detected dengue fever cases
in the past, they were cases of foreign
infection. The two recent cases are the
first cases of local infection.
Some scholars worry that the news has
since set the alarm bells for dengue fever
ringing in Hong Kong. In addition, since
there is not yet a vaccine at present to
prevent dengue fever, the public should be
vigilant and fight the disease-spreading
mosquito at an early stage.

Anti-mosquito Ambassador
Since dengue fever may be spread in Hong Kong, to prevent the
possible outbreak of dengue fever epidemic, the school urgently
needs a number of anti-mosquito ambassadors who would take
eliminating mosquitoes as their responsibility diligently and
enthusiastically. Their duties include:
 Explain to others the measures to prevent the transmission of
Dengue fever
 Take notice of the places that may accumulate water at home or at
school, and inform adults to eliminate it
 Change at least every week the water in flower vases and fish
tanks. Avoid accumulation of water in the saucers under potted
plants.
 Cover all containers that hold water with lids.
 Put rubbish into a trash can and cover it with a lid. No littering.
Whoever meet the above qualification automatically become our
anti-mosquito ambassadors. Let’s make concerted efforts to remove
stagnant water and eliminate mosquitoes!

Dear Parents:
Since cases of locally contracted dengue fever have been reported in Hong Kong, to prevent
the spread of the disease, all Hong Kong citizens should make concerted efforts to remove
stagnant water and eliminate mosquito breeding. In order to strengthen students’ awareness of
mosquito prevention, our school has conducted teaching activities of “I have learned to
prevent dengue fever”. With the following tailor-made worksheet, we hope that students and
their parents check the potential mosquito breeding places at home, and fill in the record form,

“Dengue Fever” Information Sheet
The Department of Health detected local cases of Dengue fever for the first time. It called
on members of the public to be on guard against dengue fever by taking preventive measures
against mosquito breeding and the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
What is dengue fever?
Dengue fever is an acute viral disease. The incubation period is 3 to 14 days. Symptoms
include high fever for three to five days, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, eye pain,
nausea, vomiting and skin rash. In severe cases, the patient may present with bleeding and
shock, and can die from the disease. Children normally would have milder symptoms than
adults.
How is dengue fever transmitted?
Dengue virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. There is no person to
person spread. The mosquito Aedes albopictus, a vector known to transmit the disease, can be
found in Hong Kong. The mosquito likes to bite people during daytime, especially two hours
after sunrise and a few hours before sunset.
How to prevent dengue fever?
At present, there is no effective vaccine against dengue fever. The best way to prevent
dengue fever is to eliminate pockets of stagnant water that serve as mosquito breeding sites at
home, at schools, workplaces and their vicinity, and to avoid mosquito bites.
"Let's remove stagnant water. Eliminate mosquito for healthy living." Please take the
following precautionary measures at all times to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and avoid
mosquito bites:
1. Put all used cans and bottles into dustbins with cover.
2. Change water for plants at least once a week, leaving no water in the saucers
underneath flower pots.
3. Cover tightly all water containers, wells and water storage tanks.
4. Keep all drains free from choke.

6. Wear long-sleeved clothes and long trousers.
7. Use insect repellent over the exposed parts of the body.
8. Use mosquito screens or nets when the room is not air-conditioned.
If you notice any mosquito breeding sites in public places, you may call the Food and
Environmental Hygiene Department Hotline 2868 0000.
How to manage dengue fever?
You should seek medical advice from your doctor and inform the Department of Health
