Poster/Collage Project

Objective: Create a poster/collage that describes the Spanish imprint on the culture of Austin.
TEKS:
8.24A Identify selected racial, ethnic, and religious groups that settled in the United States and
their reasons for immigration.
8.24D Analyze the contributions of people of various racial, ethnic, and religious groups to our
national identity.
8.30A Use primary and secondary sources and visual material to acquire information about the
United States.
8.31A Use social studies terminology correctly.
8.31B Use standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation.
8.31C Transfer information from one medium to another, including written to visual and statistical
to written or visual, using computer software as appropriate.
8.31D Create written, oral, and visual presentations of social studies information.
Materials: Regular size poster board, scissors, glue, markers
Resources: photographs, magazines, newspapers, miniature samples, original drawings,
postcards, menus, etc.
Activity: Students are to create an original poster/collage that describes the Spanish influence on
the culture of Austin. Austin is rich in resources for a primary research project. Students may visit
local museums, art galleries, local Hispanic centers, or explore Austin looking for examples.
Students need to ask parents’ permission before any exploration takes place. Remember to ask
permission before taking photographs of people, churches, or other buildings. Give credit if using
other resources. All examples must have a caption that states who or what the subject is when,
where, and why or how that example ties in to the subject of the poster.
Rubric: All posters must have a title and heading.
90 – 100
10 Examples; Poster/collage fulfills objective. Design is neat, colorful, attractive, and interesting.
Captions are legible and explains who, what, where, when, and why. No technical writing
mistakes are present.
80 – 89
7-8 Examples: Poster/collage fulfills most of the objective. Design is neat, colorful, and
interesting. Captions are legible and explains most of the 5 Ws. Only a few writing mistakes are
present.
70 – 79 5 Examples: Poster/collage attempts to meet the objective but doesn’t quite succeed.
Design is neat. Captions are present. Numerous writing mistakes are present.
Incomplete/60 Fewer than 5 examples; Poster/collage does not meet objective. Design shows
lack of organization and is lacking captions
