WOW Game Title: Smarty Pants Content Area: Math TEKS Focus: Time Physical Education Unit: Locomotor Skills, Muscular Strength and Endurance Grade: 4 Resource: Tracy Lord, http://www.fi.edu/time/Journey/author.html Equipment/Materials: 2 balls or bean bags for taggers, Smarty Pants Question/Answer Sheets (provided). Set Up: Students are in scattered formation. Have 6-8 students on boundary line as “Smarty Pants” and give them each a clock. (These can be made by the students prior to the game or the clocks provided can be used. If clocks provided are used, be sure that the “Smarty Pants” knows the answer to the questions.) Activity: Give 6-8 students a Smarty Pants question/answer sheet (clocks). These students are the “Smarty Pants”. Pick 2-3 students as taggers and give them the tagging equipment (ball or bean bag). On go, all “Smarty Pants” will begin walking around the perimeter of the gym. All other students should begin to move in the designated locomotor movement (walk, jog, skip, gallop, slide, etc.). When students are tagged, they should go outside the game boundary line and perform a designated number of muscular strength and endurance exercises such as push-ups, lunges, or curl-ups. When finished with their exercise, they should find a “Smarty Pants” and be asked a question off of the question/answer sheet. If the student answers the question correctly, that student can go back in to the game. However, if the student does not answer the question correctly, “Smarty Pants” will give them the correct answer and the student should find another “Smarty Pants” to ask them another question. When the student gets the answer correctly, he/she can continue in the tag game. Variations: Incorporate different types of locomotor skills throughout the game starting with the slower movements first – sliding, galloping, skipping, jogging. Change the muscular strength and endurance activities occasionally. Review Questions: Skill focus: Can you name a muscle used when doing push- ups? Academic focus: What does the clock look like when it is 15 minutes to 8? 1. 2. 6:40 7:20 8:30 3:00 3:35 7:15 6:05 7:05 1:35 7:20 4:35 8:20 8:25 7:30 7:35 4. 3. 9:35 7:45 8:15 6. 5. 10:40 8:00 7:50 8. 7. 7:10 10:30 6:50
