WOW Game Title: Vocabulary Dribble – variations for every grade level and subject Content Area: Social Studies Word Recognition TEKS Focus: The Geography of Texas Missions and Early Settlements in Texas/Veteran’s Day Physical Education Unit: Hand dribble, Foot dribble, Running Grade: 4 Resource: Cindy Austria Equipment/Materials: Large cards with names of subject area to be put on a far wall or playing area. You should have several cards of each name scattered all over the wall or playing area. Use basketballs, playground balls, soccer balls (age and skill appropriate), etc. Set Up: Put words of subject area to be studied on a far wall or on the ground. Students are on opposite line about 20-30 feet away. Activity: Call out a word pertaining to the subject area being studied. Student dribbles down and touches the word and dribbles back. Student should look ahead while dribbling, not at the ball. This game can be played in pairs, or in relay teams of 3 or 4. Teams can get points for correct answers. Variations: Describe the word. Describe the function of the word. Give a list of descriptions of the words they have to find on the wall. They must work together as a team to get all correct. Balls are not needed. This can be done as a running race. Change the subject area. Change the locomotor movement – skipping, galloping, sliding, etc. Instead of words, put up maps and have students point to the appropriate place.
