WOW Game Title: My Family Tree Content Area: Social Studies TEKS Focus: Families: My Family, Rules, Responsibilities, Home, Grandparents Education Unit: Locomotor, Physical Fitness Grade: 1 Resource: Paula Bowen Equipment/Materials: Blacktop or field, index cards with “Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Grandmother (2), Grandfather (2), aunt (2), and uncle (2) printed on them (4 sets), 4 crates/containers, 4 hula hoops (house/apartment) Set Up: This game is played as a relay. Place the four crates at one end of the play area. Divide the students into four groups and position them in lines at the one end of the playing area. Place one set of family member cards in each container/crate at the opposite end of the playing area. Place a hula hoop around the container. X X X X Activity: Before the game begins, the teacher will determine the locomotor skill (jog, hop, jump, gallop, skip). On the teacher’s signal, the first student will go to the crate and pick up a hula hoop (apartment/house) and bring it back to their team. The other students will jog in place while waiting on their teammate to return. The next student in line will go to the crate, pick a card and begin building their family in the hoop. Play continues until all family members are placed in the hoop. The teacher can discuss that families can look very different.
