Dear Austin ISD Social Studies Educator: As the Korean Consul-General, I have been assigned to Texas and have been at my post since March 2009. For the last 25 months, I have been in contact with many people in various fields. Through these contacts, I am often surprised that most people do not have updated information on Korea, even though Korea and the United States remain strong allies and our mutual transactions are ever increasing. Korea is the world’s 15th largest economy with an accomplished political democracy. The exports from the State of Texas to Korea amounts to 5.3 billion US dollars, making Korea the 5th largest export destination for Texas after Mexico, Canada, China and the Netherlands, a fact that is not wellknown to most people from Texas. This trade will surely grow, considering that the Panama Canal is scheduled to expand in 2014, and the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries is expected to be ratified in the near future. With recognition of this situation, I would like to host an event in order to introduce you to Korea. For this purpose, I would like to invite you to the following program, which is being organized by the Korean Consulate (Houston Korean Education Center) in collaboration with the Austin Independent School District. - Title: Evening for Educators: Economic Dynamism and Cultural Diversity in Korea - Date & Time: 6:30 pm, Wednesday, May 18th - Program(Tentative) Congratulatory Remarks by Austin ISD Representative Korean Cultural Dance Performance Korean Taekwondo Short presentation on Korea - Place: Renaissance Hotel(Wedgwood Room) 9712 Arboretum Blvd. Austin, TX 78759 (512) 343-2626 Please RSVP Austin ISD Social Studies Supervisor Joe Ramirez at joramire@austinisd.org on or before May 9, 2011.
