Note to Usability class, October 28, 2009
Intro Usability
Class, hi.
Several things:
- I’ve decided that you need time to work on your projects more than you need more
guest presentations. So I’ve cancelled the speakers for this Monday and we will
devote the whole class to “workshop” time. Show up, test pilot subjects, work on
materials, ask me questions about materials/testing procedure, whatever. The IX
Lab will be available to you, as it will be every Monday a.m. from here on out. Of
course, you may reserve it at other times, as you see fit.
- Thursday, November 12th, is World Usability Day. Watch/participate as you wish:
http://www.worldusabilityday.org/
- Scott Isensee sent me a link to some free, online books on usability and cognate
disciplines. Herewith: http://www.theuxbookmark.com/2009/07/interactiondesign/printed-books-on-user-experience-free-to-read-online/
- Also here’s a link to an article Scott wrote on integrating usability into agile
computing methods: http://talk.bmc.com/blogs/blog-isensee/scott-isensee/agile/
- Here are three Jobs/Internships I’ve recently heard about. Let me know if you have
any questions about them, or would like a particular introduction to the contact
person. They are all friends of mine. Indeed, Anuj Nanavadi, from NVidia, used to
be a student here, and he got his job there by starting as an intern. I don’t THINK
he made more than I did, when he was an intern there and I was faculty here – but it
was close.

My department has approval for a UX co-op for 5 months full time or 10
months part time in 2010. We prefer candidates who reside in Austin or
RTP. The position involves working on WebSphere application server and
cloud products. Responsibilities could include performing usability
testing, UI design, heuristic reviews, analysis of customer feedback etc.
The application domain is systems administration. UI types include
Web-based UIs as well as notational interfaces such as scripting
languages.
Familiarity with Web technologies is a definite plus. Some familiarity
with programming concepts is helpful but not a requirement.
If you have anyone good, please have them send me a resume or CV.
Thanks,
Jim

I was curious if any of your students would be interested in internship positions at NVIDIA in usability
engineering. We are looking for awesome interns for spring 2010 and would love to talk to someone from UT.
Warm regards,
