Style Sheet for the GS Writing Awards

The creative writing category includes personal essays, fiction, and poetry.

Issues relating to women and/or gender should play a central part in the work.

If submitting personal essays or fiction, students should submit only one piece of prose,
and it should be 4,000 words or fewer.

If submitting poetry, students should submit five poems or fewer, a total of ten pages or
fewer.

If entering the scholarly essay category, students should submit one essay that is 5,000
words or fewer and include a works cited page.
Cover Sheet:
1. Each submission must have a cover sheet.
2. Your name and full contact information (including student ID, e-mail and phone number)
should appear ONLY on the cover sheet.
(Please remove your name from all other pages before submitting. The judges will not
see your name.)
3. The cover sheet should also include:
a. The category in which you are submitting (Undergraduate Creative,
Undergraduate Scholarly, Graduate Creative, or Graduate Scholarly).
b. The title for your essay, story, or poem(s) (REQUIRED).
Format:
Please check both spelling and grammar before submitting. You are encouraged to use the
UMSL Writing Center or a peer to proofread materials before final submission. Entries must be:
1. Word-processed.
2. Double-spaced.
3. Font: 12 point in Arial or Times New Roman. (This is 12 point TNR.)
4. Margins: 1 inch top, bottom, and sides.
5. One side of paper only.
6. Numbered and stapled pages.
7. Please do not use any report covers, folders, or binders.
References:
If you use Footnotes (or Endnotes) and Bibliography, you should use a recognized style (i.e.,
Chicago Style, APA style, or MLA Style) consistently throughout the entire essay. Information
