c. Prohibiting cancelling classes – email from provost – cannot cancel classes
without having alternate class meeting, or some other alternate – something
planned for that time frame
2. Internships – ECSE (including criteria and info to be included in the letter / form)
NGO/RR
a. Student has to submit a letter to us which is sent around amongst the faculty.
b. In a meeting, the faculty decide whether we will allow them to apply
c. Do we need a procedure for ECSE?
d. ECE had one student who did an internship and they learned lessons in this
i. We want to make internships available but we want to improve the process
e. Other than GPA what are we looking for in the application for an internship? We
use all of these factors to determine if the student will succeed in an internship.
f. There are agreements with the school. If the school breaks the agreement, they
are held to this agreement.
g. Interns should not study abroad
i. Cannot have two study abroad in their student teaching semester
ii. Email from Cheryl Wegner is sent to students. We should connect with
her to have that added to her email.
3. Facebook page – Eileen
a. Please have any changes to me by Friday
4. Registration – Rowand
a. 326 – are there sufficient materials for supporting more than 50 students – yes
i. David will teach a summer session of this class – 14 on wait list
b. 324 – 12 on the wait list
c. Minor and majors are about same level – about 250 each
d. MCEA could be pushing students into this minor
5. Curricular – Rowand
a. Fieldwork
i. C&I are in the process of changing in the secondary and elementary levels
ii. Think we will have to have our minors take only one fieldwork rather than
two
iii. Looking at semester five through student teachers
iv. In the seventh semester they take our field 410 and reading 461 & 462
which puts the students at 19 credits
v. MCEA will take a middle level field (this matches with our 385)
vi. In the eighth semester they will have an elementary field (this would
match up with our 410)
vii. Is 485 a better option? It would put our minors at a disadvantage because
they don’t have the other methods courses that help our majors
viii. Could C&I take over the specfld 410? We could sub in their 492 for our
410.
ix. 70% of our teams are speced and speced so it would work for us to no
longer have the minors in specfld 410
x. Secondary has already made a shift for Fall 14 – they are already
recommending their minors don’t take our specfld 410.
xi. The WIFOR is making students pick between field and taking Reading
461.
xii. They have not consulted with us – they are still in the development phase.
Melanie Agnew is aware of the changes they are looking to make.
xiii. With 385 we are having difficulties with meeting the requirements and
finding placements
xiv. Create a committee including Sharon Kolb, Tia Schultz, Rowand
Robinson to revamp field.
xv. Sharon to chair it, create a grid to illustrate how the courses work together.
xvi. Specifically we are talking about the minor program because of the
changes C&I are taking.
xvii. What is it we want our minors to have for experience?
xviii. 385 gives them a speced perspective for field.
xix. Reading 461 will show up in their AR in F14. They are going through all
of the vetting process.
xx. They are looking at what the speced piece in their lesson plan. C&I may
have to adjust to what we are doing.
xxi. We may want to think about switching number of credits for the fields
xxii. Sharon, Nomsa, Katy, Tia, Rowand for the committee
b. 480/470
i. How do we want to move forward with these? Do we want to combine
these courses?
ii. We cannot move to having no emphasis – per DPI we have to have an
emphasis.
iii. Revisit of the undergrad program – didn’t check with DPI and some of the
changes we are proposing
iv. It makes sense to put it in a combined class.
v. Change to 3 credit
vi. Revisit what content we want in there
vii. Sharon makes a motion to combine 480 / 470
viii. Katy seconds
ix. Discussion:
1. Make the number 480/680; do a curricular change to delete 470
2. 3 credits – if we could make it a time when they are out of the
student teaching situation. We could pull them out on Friday for
half a day or we could pull them in on a Saturday.
3. For edTPA it needs to be front loaded
x. Carried unanimously
xi. Whatever we create we can pilot next semester
1. We are piloting now so we could use that to create the curricular
change.
2. Needs to stay in our department – never have adhoc teach this
xii. Kelly has resigned edTPA lead and is transitioning in to having Marie
Benson take over.
xiii. Next step is to write the course proposal – David and Kelly will write the
course proposals.
c. 324 – change to IEP and Law class to be in the last semester before student
teaching.
d. WIFOR – Madison has created their own modules and David wants to compare
these with what we are using for 486. Kelly has it – she will forward it to
Rowand. Madison got funding from system so they have to provide it to all
systems schools.
e. 486 / 487 – won’t go through for spring. Requiring this for our CD people will
create a problem.
f. Next steps – get all the descriptions for current classes. Get all summaries to me
by 11/22/13
i. 5 bullet points for what is covered in the class
6. Move to adjourn Kelly Jewell
2nd
Tia Schultz – carried unanimously
