ABSTRACT: 3-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a new disruptive technology that may address the ever increasing demand over organ transplants by providing on-demand individualized construction of biological tissues and organs. 3D bioprinting, by strategically positioning individual or group of cells into specific locations in various bio-scaffold materials and appropriate extracellular matrices, aims to build functional biological constructs that mimic the organ functions. Several key technical features of the 3D bioprinting techniques are reviewed, along with potential medical and industrial applications. Several unanswered components to ultimately create printed biological organs are discussed. Owing to the complicated nature of the human organs, in addition to the legal and ethical requirements for their safe implantation into the human body, it would take at least several years of research and development, perhaps even decades, to produce implantable bioprinted organs with full functionality, which also suggest much rooms remaining for further research. Multifaceted and diverse applications of printed organs/tissue would definitely mean profound impact on health. BRIEF BIO: Dr. Yoo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He received his MBA from University of Massachusetts and his PhD in Radiological Sciences from HarvardMIT, Division of Health Science and Technology (HST) Program. Dr. Yoo has received several awards including the ULTRA Round Table Recognition Award from the Korean Science and Engineering Foundation and CIMIT Innovation Award from the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology. His research interests include the continued development and extension of 3D bioprinting technology, and further innovations in functional neuromodulatory techniques using focused ultrasound (FUS), along with their clinical translations through collaboration with clinicians and researchers world-wide. With over 90 peer reviewed publications, Dr. Yoo has made a large contribution to the current literatures in his field.
