eW/FS/WE/001 AB4i Fountains A fountain is water that moves up from the groundwater to the surface. It is also called a spring. Rain falls on the surface. It seeps through the surface soil into the underground. It becomes part of underground water. The underground water moves underneath hard rocks or clay banks. Because the underground water cannot escape through these hard rocks or clay banks, pressure builds up in the underground water. Springs is usually formed where the ground water reaches the surface next to the rock or clay banks. At a spring the underground water can spurt or seep through the surface. Once the spring water is on the surface, it flows together with rivers towards the sea. www.ewisa.co.za Contact: ewisa@wamsys.co.za or ewisa@wisa.co.za www.ewater.co.za www.waterinfo.co.za www.waterinformation.co.za
