SFCC Offers New Evening Health, Fitness Class for Diabetics
May 19, 2004 — This summer, diabetics can learn to control their disease with diet, exercise,
medication and weight control. Santa Fe Community College is offering an eight-week class,
Health and Fitness for the Diabetic, beginning June 8.
Health and Fitness for the Diabetic will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7:35 p.m.
Anyone living with diabetes or insulin resistance is encouraged to register with a friend or family
member.
Diabetes, a disease of sugar metabolism, can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney
disease, amputations and early death. Some 18.2 million American — roughly six percent of the
population — live with diabetes. Also, more than 8 percent of Hispanic adults and nearly 14
percent of Native American adults have the disease.
Health and Fitness for Diabetics will offer a supportive and educational environment where
diabetics can exercise together, support each other and exchange information with the assistance
of instructor and exercise physiologist Drey Fisher.
Students will receive personalized exercise programs and pre- and post-workout blood glucose
testing. They also will learn about nutrition, sugar metabolism, diabetes physiology and more.
For information call Drey Fisher at SFCC's Wellness Center at (505) 428-1291. Santa Fe
Community College is located at 6401 Richards Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87508.
