Section A – Variation Section B – all other topics Students should: Be able to define and illustrate concepts. See the link between concepts. Know what is involved in communicating, and how to analyze conversation. Know what is involved in data collection and analysis. Problems, solutions, advantages and disadvantages of approaches. Know what is involved in data analysis. Different approaches, etc. Be able to analyze graphs, charts showing variation results of data collected. Know variation studies, findings and conclusions. Know the theories used to explain variation and/or change. Know the extent to which these theories can be applied to Caribbean situations. Know about the social variables which affect language variation and change – such as age, social class, gender, etc. Know about language change, and studies related to this area in sociolinguistics.
