Sustainability Committee Meeting Minutes 3/11/2015 In attendance were Sharon Bliss, Adam Weber, Anna Schlosser, Evan Thompson, Ruth Meza, Joy Durighello, Joe Cannon, Anastasia Fiandaca, Denise Louie, Michelle Gorthy, Felix Deng, and Chris Lewis. 1. Meeting was called to order at 4:34 pm 2. Attendees introduced themselves to one another 3. Anastasia Fiandaca agreed to email the minutes from the last meeting for the review and approval by members. 4. Farmer’s Market update a. Dominik was ill and could not discuss this. Moved to next meeting. 5. Solar PV in the MUB parking lot a. Dominik was ill and could not discuss this. Moved to next meeting. 6. Update re: student-driven research project a. Anna Schlosser described the goal of the survey: to gauge awareness and interest of students in sustainability-related classes/programs b. Anna read to the committee the draft of survey questions and asked for feedback c. Various suggestions were made and committee acknowledged the excellent draft d. Anna agreed to email the committee a final draft for our review prior to the April 8th meeting e. Evan Thompson shared his goal to begin surveying students during Earth Week 7. Update on CCSF Earth Day a. Adam Weber spoke with Nathan Steele regarding having the CCSF debate team prepare for and perform an informal debate for Earth Day. i. Time and location TBD 1. Suggested locations: MUB 140 or Science 100 ii. Topic TBD 1. Possibilities include: SF ban on plastic water bottles, fracking, GMOs, Ca. ban on plastic bags, population growth iii. Adam will email the committee with details re: date, time, location, and topic iv. Michelle Gorthy and other faculty will identify educational benefits of attending debates and will help publicize and encourage other instructors to send their classes to this event b. Anastasia Fiandaca will follow up with Peggy Lopipero-Langmo re: inviting the Bay Mobile to come to Ram Plaza on Earth Day c. Joe Cannon will check with NPS/GGNRA re: coming to Ram Plaza on Earth Day d. Denise Louie has been asked to request free condoms for distribution from the Center for Biological Diversity e. Anastasia Fiandaca will do counseling/promotion of SUST classes in Ram Plaza or the Science Bldg on Mon-Weds. April 20-22 and asked for students/faculty members to join her. i. Anna, Adam, and Ruth agreed to help. f. Anastasia Fiandaca suggested that any students who wish to get involved with Frisco Day to promote SUST to incoming students contact Margaret Sanchez. i. Check in regarding updating of ENVS AS degree a. Joe Cannon shared that he and Peggy will be working on this and that they must map the SLOs for all courses that are part of the proposed revision before it can be sent on for approval. SF ban on plastic water bottles a. Michelle Gorthy described the ban (the sale of plastic water bottles has been banned on SF public property) and proposed that this might allow CCSF to revisit this issue. b. Felix Deng, a member of A.S., expressed his wish to find out why CCSF had turned down the offer of a free refillable water station from the SFPUC. i. Felix discussed the importance of this type of water fountain in terms of reducing plastic water bottle use, etc., the cost of these stations, and his dismay in learning that CCSF had declined the gift of one. ii. No one on the committee had any information about the offer or its refusal. c. Michelle asked anyone wishing to work on these issues to get in touch with her. Need for new chair/co-chair for 2015-16 a. Michelle Gorthy will be taking a leave of absence in 15-16, thus at least one new chair/co-chair will be needed. b. Joe Cannon expressed interest. c. Anastasia Fiandaca is also interested. Workgroup on Committee SLOs a. Anastasia requested participation in completing an evaluation and choosing accreditation standards that are supported by the committee. b. This workgroup will meet on M or W from 12-1 pm. c. Joe Cannon and Adam Weber will join this workgroup and assist Anastasia and Michelle Gorthy. DPW landscaping project on Ocean Ave. a. Denise Louie brought this issue to our attention and will email the group additional information so that we may get involved in asking DPW to plant at least 75% plants native to the Bay Area. Joint pilot project for sustainability a. Chris Lewis (Dep’t Chair, Earth Sciences) suggested we develop an idea about a sustainabilitythemed pilot project that would support 2014 Accreditation Standards, and pitch this pilot project to a number of departments. Those that are interested could site the project in the next Program Review to request funding to support it. Future meetings a. Weds., April 8, 4:30-5:30 Cloud Hall 365 b.
