The skills gained in ESOL 0350 are further refined to guide students toward mastery of deduction, inference, and figurative language. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate familiarity with a challenging academic target vocabulary. 2. Develop reading skills such as previewing, scanning, using context clues to clarify meaning, finding the main idea, summarizing, and making inferences. 3. Read and discuss with understanding an English-language novel. Attendance & Tardiness: According to HCCS policy, you may be dropped if you miss 12.5% (four days) of class. Being on time is very important in the United States. If you arrive more than five minutes late, you will be counted tardy. (3 tardies=1 absence) If you are more than fifteen minutes late, you will be counted absent. You must return from lunch and break on time. Make-up Policy: Missing a test is a serious matter. Make-up tests will only be given in extreme cases. If you have a serious emergency, it is your responsibility to call me before the scheduled exam so that I can make arrangements with you. Scholastic Dishonesty: Giving or receiving information from other students on a test or project is cheating. Students who cheat will receive a zero for the assignment. Repeated incidents can result in suspension from the class. Disability Support: Students who need reasonable accommodations for disabilities should contact the Disability Support Service counselor to make necessary arrangements. Ms. Kim Ingram is the NE College DSS counselor. Her number is 713-718-8420. Teachers are only authorized to provide accommodations requested by that office. Electronic Devices: When you enter the classroom, turn off your cell phone. Text-messaging is not permitted during class. Any other electronic device (laptops, IPODs, etc.) not authorized by the professor must be turned off. Withdrawal Policy: Faculty cannot withdraw students on their final semester roll sheets. If you cannot complete the course, you must complete the withdrawal form before the official “Drop” date. Otherwise, you will receive a grade, probably an “F.” EGLS3 -- Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the survey as part of the Houston Community College Student System online near the end of the term.
