IT442 – Fall 2010 Bruce Mahfood Project 3 Part 2 – Windows Server Management Consoles Lab activities: Start Windows Update and update the computer. If the update window says that the system is up to date, click on “Check for updates” to make sure. If no updates, continue. There is a long list on page 99 showing the core MSC files provided by Microsoft. You will need to choose some of these consoles to open and play with. Find out what they can do for you. For each console you play with, see whether you are allowed to connect to another computer, which should be the case for all available consoles. Of course, we have already gone into detail looking at the Computer Management Console (CompMgmt.MSC), so skip that console. Do not go into any real detail with each of these, but open each one and figure out what it can do for you. Make sure not to make any changes to these console files as you go through this part of the project, since these are system MCS files. In order to open an MSC file, you can click Start > Run, and type the name of the MSC file (including the .msc extension) into the Run dialog box. Written Assignment – Part 1: For this part of the assignment you will add to your written narrative the discoveries you made about each of the predefined consoles that you looked at. This narrative is to be turned in on 10/6 at the beginning of class. This is to be a separate document to the written assignment that will come with Part 3. Make sure you put enough detail about what you have learned here. Convince me that you discovered new information and want to record your findings so that you can go back to your recordings at a later point. 1
