This course develops reading skills and comprehension of more difficult reading selections. ESOL 0350 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This course seeks to prepare students for college level or workforce study by accomplishing the following objectives. Identify main ideas and supporting details Determine sequence of events Use context clues to define new vocabulary Be able to draw conclusions from textbook material COURSE OUTCOMES: At the end of this course, you should be able to do the following: Acquire a reading recognition vocabulary of approximately 1000-15000 words. Read with comprehension texts of appropriate difficulty in the narrative and expository rhetorical modes. Identify the main idea of a text Locate specific information and supporting facts in a text Use reading skills in scanning, vocabulary in context, interpreting information in graphics, and separating fact from opinion. GRADE BREAKDOWN: Your grade will be calculated as follows: Tests 40 Quizzes 40 Class/Home/Lab Work 10 Reading Projects 10 Total 100% A =100-90 Passing B=89-80 Passing C=79-70 Passing IP=69 or below. Can not go to the next level TEXTBOOK: Interactions 2 Attendance: Attendance is very important. If you are absent more than 10 classes, including lab hours, during the semester, you may be dropped from all of your classes Tardiness: Be on time. If you are tardy more than 15 minutes, I will mark you one hour absent. If you come to lab more than 15 minutes late, you will be marked one hour absent. Cell phones or other means of communication must be turned off during class. Please keep all cell phones/communication devices inside your bag or pocket during class. Withdrawals: A student may drop his/her Gulfton courses for any reason until November 18th, at 4:30 p.m. A student may also be dropped from the Gulfton program for excessive absences until that date. After November 18th, the student will receive the grade that she/he has earned. College policy prohibits faculty from assigning a grade of W (“Withdrew,” or dropped) after the official drop date. Makeup Tests/ Late Homework: If you are absent, please ask a classmate for any missed assignments. Homework will be accepted no later than the next class period. There will be no makeup tests or quizzes without a documented, compelling reason.. Academic Honesty / Cheating: Any form of copying, cheating, or plagiarism will result in a 0 for the assignment.
