Dear Colleagues:
Based on the recommendation of Dr. Susan Mackey-Kallis and Dr. Craig M. Wheeland, I
write to appoint you as a member of the International Leadership Team of Villanova
University and to provide you with the team’s charge.
The overarching goal will be to develop a strategic plan for comprehensive
internationalization that will help Villanova University strengthen our global leadership
and engagement.
To assist in this effort, we have joined with the American Council of Education (ACE) as
a member of their 2012 Internationalization Laboratory learning community. ACE
works with participating institutions to audit and assess existing international initiatives,
to develop a strategy for comprehensive internationalization aligned with mission, to
articulate specific goals, and to assess progress towards these goals with a particular
focus on student-learning outcomes. The International Leadership Team, chaired by Dr.
Susan Mackey-Kallis, a recent ACE Fellow, will collaborate with ACE and eight other
institutions---Becker College (MA), Grand Valley State University (MI), Indiana
University/Purdue University Indianapolis, Merrimack College (MA), Samford University
(AL), Texas Christian University, University of Minnesota Duluth, and Virginia
Commonwealth University---over the course of the next year and-a-half to two years to
develop a plan for comprehensive internationalization.
In order to achieve this goal you are specifically charged with the following:
·
Develop a vision of Internationalization for Villanova aligned with our Mission
and Strategic Plan.
·
Create a set of international learning goals aligned with that vision and an
assessment plan for those goals.
·
Review current internationalization activities at Villanova with the objective of
sharpening institutional goals and determining whether students have sufficient
opportunities to meet those learning goals.
·
Analyze the findings of the review.
·
Develop a strategic action plan analyzing the state of internationalization on
campus and recommend internationalization goals and the means of achieving
them.
·
Create a Communication and Engagement plan to ensure that the wider
university community, including faculty, staff, students and alumni, are
informed of the committee’s work, are engaged in meaningful discussion of the
Leadership Team’s work as it unfolds, and have adequate opportunities for
input.
Although other areas to examine for assessment and/or development may emerge over
the course of the committee’s deliberation and research, the followed are suggested for
at least initial review:
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
cross-college and cross-discipline collaboration on international initiatives
international research/grant development
international teaching and learning (including curriculum, area studies
programs, and learning outcomes development)
education technology and internationalization
education abroad
faculty development in internationalization
international scholar and student development
organizational models for managing university-wide international affairs
intersections among multiculturalism, globalism, and internationalization
relationships with local ethnic/language communities and international
stakeholders (e.g., multinational corporations, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and international professional organizations).
As you carry out your charge, please consult within and without the institution, ensuring
that perspectives, needs, and aspirations of the wide variety of stakeholders are
considered. As the duration of the University’s engagement with the ACE
Internationalization Laboratory is 1 1/2 to 2 years, the task force is different from many
such groups in that the expectation is to complete this charge over this period with
recommendations for action to be taken to the V.P.A.A. If certain items within the
charge can be addressed before completion of the full report and are ready for
University action, please forward them separately for consideration.
The ACE Internationalization Lab Director, Dr. Barbara Hill, will be at Villanova on
September 19th to meet senior administrators and to conduct a roundtable discussion
with the International Leadership Team and key stakeholders, to define key questions
and issues, to clarify goals, and to build support for the process across the University.
The chair, Susan Mackey-Kallis, will contact you in late August to launch the task force,
review the charge, and to prepare for Dr. Hill’s visit.
This is an exciting initiative, one that will have a broad and lasting impact on the
institution. Thank you for agreeing to serve on this committee.
Regards
Rev. Kail C. Ellis, O.S.A.
