Students view photograph; list things they see in the photograph and questions they have about the photograph, individually on paper. 1. Share orally. Add to lists, if desired. 1. Choose and do a follow-up writing activity: a) Write a letter to someone in the photo b) Write a letter as if you were someone in the photo c) Write a poem relating to the photo. (Poem form(s) should already be taught). 4. Students shared aloud their writings. Materials Needed: * 1 photograph and opaque projector (or) enough copies of a photo for pairs to share. * notebook paper and pencils Essential Questions: . 1 What skills, elements, vocabulary were taught? composition, balance, center of focus, positive/negative space point of view changes 2. How did you assess the children’s understanding? informal assessment of use/understanding of vocabulary, teacher assessment of writings 3. Where could you go from here? Give each student a different photo/magazine picture. Create a book of these photos with their writings. 4. Other comments: The poetic forms my students were familiar with were diamante, haiku and conplets.
