PHRA 1445 is a web-enhanced course. Web-enhanced courses meet a portion of the time in a
traditional face-to-face classroom environment and the remainder of the course presentation,
interaction, activities, and exercises is delivered through various electronic means. Students should be
prepared to spend as much time engaged in PHRA 1445 course activities as in a traditional class,
even though they will not be physically present in the classroom for all the instruction. Web-enhanced
courses include face-to-face instruction and assignments as well as online handouts, assignments,
readings, and quizzes. HCC utilizes Eagle Online (Moodle) for the online portion of this course.
Students should check the PHRA 1445 Eagle Online (Moodle) homepage for instructor news,
e-mails, and announcements on a daily basis.
Online lesson modules can be accessed via http://hccs.edu/district/students/student-sign-ins/ Students
are to read and study each lesson and complete all readings, activities, assignments, discussions, and
quizzes. When working through an online lesson, students must be diligent and make sure to click on

Instructor's
Requirements:
 The student will be expected to fully participate in and attend all lab periods. In
addition, it is expected that the student arrive to lab on time, preferably 15 minutes
earlier to allow student time to prepare for skills practice as most instructional
demonstrations occur within the first 10 minutes of the lab period.
 During the laboratory sessions, the student will be required to demonstrate proper
aseptic technique in all areas covered as taught in this course. Students must pass
(100% competent) all lab skills that pertain to sterile products training. Students
must also demonstrate an overall competency in sterile products preparation.
 Students will be required to wear clean, pressed scrubs to each lab. Any student
who fails to wear clean, pressed scrubs to any lab will not be allowed to participate
and no makeup for the missed lab will be provided. Note: The Pharmacy
Technician Program does not provide scrubs.
 Students will be expected to perform lab skills in a quick, efficient, and effective
manner for tests. Therefore, any student having difficulty in lab has the option of
scheduling lab tutoring for extra practice.
 Students must attend their regular lab times in order to participate in lab tutoring.
Lab tutoring is not a substitute for attending a scheduled lab period. Students who
do not attend their scheduled lab period will not be allowed to request lab tutoring.
Check with instructor to schedule lab tutoring.
 Remember: SAFETY FIRST!! Safety must be observed at ALL times in lab. Proper
protocol must be followed at all times when working with needles and syringes. The
safety technique (scooping method) must be followed at all times to avoid any
needle sticks.

Students must follow the Pharmacy Technician Program SAFETY RULES and
REGULATIONS set forth in the Student Handbook and IV Lab. Included in these
rules is proper disposal of all sharps and contaminated materials. ALL sharps (glass
& needles) must be disposed of in a red sharps container or yellow sharps
container if it is chemotherapy. ALL used vials and syringes without needle attached
are to be disposed of in the RED BIOHAZARD BOX. ALL regular trash (soft trash
such as paper, gauze, syringe wrappers, etc.) is to be disposed of in the regular
trash can. Failure to abide by the Pharmacy Technician Program SAFETY RULES &
REGULATIONS will be grounds for dismissal from IV lab. Repeated failure to abide
by PROGRAM SAFETY RULES can be grounds for DISMISSAL from the program.
 Proper procedure MUST be followed if a student gets a needle stick during lab.
Student must IMMEDIATELY notify instructor or support specialist. Sharps will be
disposed of in a sharps container but all other supplies such as swabs, gauze,
syringe, gloves, paper towels that have been contaminated with bodily fluids such as
blood must be placed in a plastic bag before final disposal into the RED
BIOHAZARD BOX. An incident report MUST also be filled out by student
immediately after clean up. Failure to follow this procedure can also be grounds to
be dismissed from lab and/or dismissal from the program.
 Failure to follow guidelines for USP NF, <797> can be grounds for dismissal from
the lab and repeated incidents can be grounds for dismissal from the program.
 Students are not allowed to use (text or call) any cell phones in the IV lab. If a
student has to use their cell phone due to a personal emergency they must notify
their instructor before they can ungown completely so that student can leave the lab.
 Any student who leaves the lab early without prior approval from instructor will be
counted as absent and if there is a participation grade given for that day the student
will be given a grade of “0”.
Program/Discipline
Requirements:
As your Instructor, it is my responsibility to:
 Provide the grading scale and detailed grading formula explaining how student
grades are to be derived
 Facilitate an effective learning environment through class activities, discussions, and
lectures
 Description of any special projects or assignments
 Inform students of important dates including last day for withdrawals:
o
o
Oct 29th : last day for 70% refund
Oct 31st : last day for 25% refund
o Nov 21st : last day for administrative/student withdrawals
 Inform students of policies such as attendance, tardiness and make ups
 Provide the course outline and class calendar which will include a description of any
special projects or assignments and final examination dates for lecture and lab
 Arrange to meet with individual students before and after class as required
To be successful in this class, it is the student’s responsibility to:
 Come to class regularly. You cannot learn if you are not present.
 While in class, be PRESENT. It’s not enough just to be in the room. Consciously pay
attention in class. Take part in exercises and discussions.
 Come to class prepared. The majority of what you learn takes place OUTSIDE OF
CLASS. The information covered in class is only preparation for the learning you do
in between sessions.
 LISTEN! Remember hearing is noise and listening is comprehension. See how
much you can learn from the ideas of others.
 CONCENTRATE. Concentration is a SKILL. You are capable of doing it. You do it
all the time. Find out what distracts you, and control it. Find out what helps you
concentrate, and use it.
 Develop INTERNAL MOTIVATION. Self-motivation is the key to success in any area
of life. Studying and being present in class is no exception. The key to self motivation
is finding how each subject applies to you and your own world. Only YOU can selfmotivate!
 ALWAYS COME TO CLASS PREPARED! Unprepared, you cannot take advantage
of what is happening in class, or add to learning experience. TAKE NOTES!
 Ask QUESTIONS. Questions are a major link to real learning. Ask questions in class
to clarify your understanding. The only bad question is the one that goes unasked.
Your brain does not like unanswered questions. If you really ASK, your brain will
look for answers.
PHRA 1445 Pharmacy Program Lab Dress Codes:
No lab coat is required in this lab. Must wear approved Coleman College ID Badge. No
makeup. No Jewelry (including: earrings, rings, watches, bracelets, body piercings, etc).
Fingernails must be clean, manicured, and ½ cm or shorter. Nail polish and fake/solar nails

printed dress code may be dismissed from class, lab and/or may be subject to a reduction in
course, lab grade.
Instructor Grading
Criteria
Color Scrubs to wear: Ceil Blue
PHRA 1445 is divided into two (2) separate sections – lecture and lab. Students must
achieve a passing grade in each section independently (classroom AND lab) to receive a
passing course grade. The grades from each section will be calculated separately as
described below:
LECTURE GRADE:
Lecture Passing Grade: 70% or higher
Students must maintain a 70% or higher average on total points available in the classroom in
order to be eligible for a passing course grade.
Grading System:
CLASSROOM
A = 100 – 90%
B = 89 – 80%
C = 79 – 70%
F = 69 – 0%
FX = failure due to lack of attendance
*No D's will be given in this class**
No Extra Credit is offered in this class.
LAB GRADE:
ALL lab skills competencies and the USP <797> test in the PHRA 1445 lab section are
graded as either PASS or FAIL. To be eligible for a passing course grade, the student must
receive a grade of “PASS” for all lab skills competencies AND for the USP <797> exam.
Lab Skills Competencies
All lab skills competencies are assessed on process validation (PV) checklists that are given
to the student at the beginning of the semester. The student must achieve 100%
competency on each of the seven (7) PV checklists to receive a grade of “PASS.”
NOTE: Student’s competency will be determined by the instructor’s professional knowledge
and evaluation.
USP <797> Exam
In addition to the 7 PV checklists, the student will also be assessed in lab with a USP <797>
written exam. To receive a grade of “PASS” on the USP <797> exam, the student must
achieve a grade of 80% or higher.
FINAL COURSE GRADE
The student’s final course grade will be an average of their lecture and lab grades.
Remember, students must achieve a passing grade in each PHRA 1445 section (lecture &
lab) independently in order to receive a passing course grade.
The final course grade will be calculated by averaging the student’s final lecture grade
percentage with their lab USP <797> exam percentage, provided that the student has
received a grade of “PASS” on their USP <797> exam AND on all 7 lab process validation
checklists.

NOTE: Regarding lab skills evaluation and grading criteria.
Lab Skills Evaluation
Prior to lab skills performance evaluation, all students will be given written grading
criteria for lab skills assessments. It is possible that an error on the student’s lab
skills practice may be missed or overlooked by the instructor, lab assistant or fellow
student who checked the practice skill. This overlooked error may be counted as
correct, when in fact, it is incorrect.
Regardless of whether or not the practice skill was marked incorrectly or not, the
student will always be held accountable and graded accordingly to the written criteria.
FX GRADES:
Regarding students who either never attended or stop attending class (without
withdrawing themselves), the following processes must be observed:
Assign the new final grade of “FX” to students who stopped attending class: The
Department of Education now requires that we make a distinction between an “earned” grade
of “F” (i.e. for poor performance) and a grade of “F” due to a lack of attendance. To make that
distinction, we have created a new grade, “FX” for failure due to lack of attendance. Starting
in Fall 2011, a field requiring the last date of educational activity will also be required if a
grade of FX is assigned. Faculty will not be allowed the option of submitting a grade change
form changing the grade of FX (or F) to W, if the student stopped attending class
EGLS3 -Evaluation for
Greater Learning
Student Survey
System
At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is
necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to
answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The
anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs
for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the survey as part of the Houston
Community College Student System online near the end of the term.
