Report of the Assessment Committee: The Assessment Committee met on April 10, 2015 (10 am) to discuss the implications of the WASC Commission letter to Chancellor Straney, dated March 6, 2015. The Committee noted the following: 1. An email reminder to all program or smaller college heads went out on April 6, 2015 regarding the ongoing Core Competency Assessment for Quantitative Reasoning. See the attached. 2. Since we are gearing up for Information literacy as the Core competency for AY 2015-2016, the Committee needs to pilot/test the improvements and streamlining done to the current Information Literacy Rubric. Papers from ENG 200G, 305, and 448 will be read against the rubric to see if the newly revised rubric is good to go; if so, the rubric will be presented to Congress at its first meeting in September for a vote. 3. We will be announcing to all colleges/programs at the end of this term and the beginning of next term that Information Literacy is coming down the pipeline. The Committee will provide samples of what kinds of artifacts may do well for this kind of assessment and which ones may not work so well. Readings will be planning for Spring of 2016. This gives programs and instructors ample time to prepare. 4. As with the core competency assessment for Written Communication last academic year, we will be pulling artifacts from self-selected 400-level courses for all programs (just one from each program). To begin satisfying GE assessment, we will also ask for volunteers in 200-level GE classes. Again, if departments need help, the assessment committee will be available to help as readers. We will also remind programs that all assessment data can be used in their program review documents. 5. There seems to be some confusion over the fact that “two” assessment committees are at work on this campus. The Chair of the Committee will seek out the Interim VCSA to discuss the need to clarify objectives and boundaries of duties as well as seek input on the WASC requirement for the interim report in 2017 that asks for co-curricular assessment. 6. Another point made in the WASC Commission letter is the need to show sustained effort in DL assessment. There are questions as to whether the current group (committee) overseeing DL is aware of this and if a set of “objectives” has been established for DL courses, and, if so, how are they being rolled out in terms of quantitative or qualitative assessment (i.e. is a new course evaluation form specific to DL being rolled out?) The Chair of the Committee will seek out Jan Ray to establish a common ground of understanding and facilitate a cooperative relationship with the current DL committee given the goals set forth for us by WASC. 7. The need to formally archive all WASC correspondences became apparent last year as we prepared for our review. Many documents pertaining to program review and sub -change are missing from the VCAA’s office—much of this may be due to the frequent turnover in the position. Going forward, all correspondences will be archived in the Hawai‘i Collection by MaryLouise Haraguchi.
