This class will meet in library room lab for theory and testing (days will be assigned by
the instructor).

make a copy of this information. It is due 01/20/2014. No exception to this rule.
The professor has the right to change the course schedule as required.
Course Description:
This course is designed to prepare the student for the Texas Department of Licensing and
Regulation cosmetology operator examination. This course is a combination of 3 lectures
and 4 labs (144 contact hours). The student will receive 5 semester credit hours. Capstone
experience for this course is the Texas Department of Licensing and regulation
cosmetology licensing examination.
Course Focus:
The focus of this course is to prepare the student for the theory and practical sections of
the licensing examination for cosmetology operator with Texas Department of Licensing
and Regulation. Emphasis is placed on speed, sanitation and accuracy of the skills that
will be part of the examination as well as the regulations and laws pertinent to the
cosmetology industry.

Exhibit the speed and sanitation necessary to complete each section of the
T.D.L.R. practical exam within the time frame required to pass licensing
examination with 100% accuracy. (S.C.A.N.S.).
Complete a plain manicure on one hand within 20 minutes with
required table set-up with 100% accuracy.

STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION SKILLS AND WORKPLACE
COMPETENCIES (SCAN SKILLS)
A study was conducted for the Department of Labor by the American Society for
Training and Development which identified the seven skills United States employers
want most in entry level employees. These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills,
communication, teamwork, critical thinking, career development and leadership.
HCCS is committed to preparing every student with the knowledge and skills
needed to succeed in today’s dynamic work environment. Towards the end, the
following skills will be included in this course. Testing and assessing these skills will
vary according to the individual instructor. The following are examples of how

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

Given the guidelines and specifications for taking the theory section of the
T.D.L.R. examination for cosmetology operator, the student will use
course competencies outlined to complete the requirements for the course.
Performance will be satisfactory if the student performs with 100%
accuracy consistent with the guidelines provided by the instructor.
Given the time and sanitation guidelines for the practical examination for
cosmetology operator license, the student will complete the skills required
in competency B. Performance will be satisfactory if the guidelines are
met and are consistent with exam guidelines.
Given the guidelines for taking the practical portion of the operator
examination, the student will pack and label the necessary supplies and
materials required for the licensing exam according to licensing
specifications. Performance will be satisfactory if the guidelines and
timeline are met.


GRADE RANGE:
90-100 =A
80-89 =B
70-79 =C

Below 60, student will repeat the course.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any students absent from class
in excess of 4 days of the hours of instruction will be dropped from the course (including
lecture and laboratory time). Students arriving late to class will not be allowed to clock
in. Ten points will be deducted for the first day absent from class and 5 for each day
thereafter from the attendance grade
WITHDRAWALS:
It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from
receiving an "F" for the class. An “F” will require you to take this course again before
clocking your hours.
DRESS CODE:
Students in the cosmetology operator candidate program will be self-motivated
individuals and will stay on task at all times. Students must be dressed professionally and
appropriately in black scrub suits and black shoes (closed-in) and must wear a lab coat to
the state practical exam.
SCHOLASTIC DISHONETY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT:
Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the
course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, using cell phones,
plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an "F" for the assignment and the course
and will be dropped from the program. See student handbook for college policy on
academic dishonesty and disciplinary problems. All levels of development in students'
training are crucial to their professional development and success, Zero Tolerance
for any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will be dismissed from the
program. Students on the client floor are expected to conduct themselves in a
professional manner. Loud boisterous conduct will constitute grounds for dismissal
from the program. Any student that does not meet the criteria for completion of the
course may de dropped from the class. Students that do not meet the skill and time
competencies will not be permitted to apply for a licensing examination date. Texas
Department of Licensing and Regulation student permits will be returned to TDLR
as “drops”.

COMPLETION OF REQUIRED CLOCK HOURS FOR LICENSING
EXAMINATION
Students that do not complete the necessary clock hours for the semester will be
given an "F" for the course. Students that have completed 1000 clock hours are eligible
to take the theory section of the state board test. It is the responsibility of the student to
make the necessary arrangements with the testing company to either take their theory
exam upon completing the 1000 hours or at the very latest, one (1) month before
completing all 1500 clock hours of the operator course. Any student who does not
comply with this requirement will be dropped instead of a request for a testing date.
There are no exceptions to this department rule. Students must make sure that all
required weekly applications to the curriculum have been completed before they
exit the program. TDLR will not allow a student to sit for the exam until all
applications to the curriculum have been completed. It is your responsibility to see
that your applications transcripts are completed and signed and dated by your
instructor.
Make an appointment with an advisor in room 150 to complete all degree plans and
schedule for your HCC certificate. Give copies to the professor for your personal file.
Make-up policy for missed assignments or tests:
There will be no make-up for missed weekly exams. Make-up for final test will be
permitted only if the student informs the instructor at least 2 weeks in advance. The
instructor will set the date for the make up test. It should be understood that the
make-up test would not be the same as the test given to the rest of the student body.
Meningitis vaccination is required to attend HCC as of January 2012. If you are 30
years or older you are not required to get a vaccination to attend college.
Students with Disabilities
Any student with a documented learning disability (e.g.
physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to
arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Services
Office at the respective college at the beginning of each semester.
Faculty is authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by
the Disability Support Services Office at the Spring Branch campus.
Special Assignment for this semester is bag inspection: A bag inspection at 10:00are on
_________, (See kit and Bag list) worth 100 points. All supplies must be in your bags by
_________. This is the first day of practical sanitation applications.

Each week you will have a test. The chapters will vary. Each test will consist of 50-100
questions. Read your book and review the Milady’s E-pack. Student can not make-up the
weekly exams.
Texas Law is a must. You should be able to quote answers according to the TDLR Rules
and Regulation Book (2014.)
