PROJECT TITLE: PRESERVE FRUITA’S ORCHARDS; GENETIC FINGERPRINTING

PROJECT ABSTRACT: Nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as a historic landscape,
Fruita includes 17 distinct orchards associated with historic homesteads, many of which had been subdivided
into smaller properties. In the original project to preserve fruita’s orchards, 2,659 fruit trees were counted in the
Park, comprising 12 distinct species and 65 varieties. 48 of the 65 varieties are heirloom varieties grown by the
early Fruita residents. Approximately 14 of these varieties are unidentified, and are potentially rare or unique
varieties. One of the objectives of the original project was to use the traditional method of comparing fruit from
the unknown trees with descriptions of varieties in the literature, to identify the unknown varieties. However,
do to the high number of varieties grown at the first part of the twentieth century (around 12,000 apple varieties
alone), our efforts were fruitless. Our new objectives are to use genetic fingerprinting to identify the unknown
varieties.
