Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader Job Description
An SI Leader is a peer facilitator who has been previously successful in the course they are selected to support through
the SI Program. The SI Leader attends their assigned course and facilitates study sessions for that specific course and
professor/instructor. The SI leader works with their faculty partner to better understand what concepts are being
emphasized at a given time and what patterns of difficulty the students have had with the course material. An SI leader is
not an instructor, but will work closely with a faculty partner to ensure that SI sessions are relevant, on-point, and tailored
to student needs while utilizing an interactive model to engage students in their own learning.
SI Leader Responsibilities:
 Enroll, attend, and participate in USC408 SI Leader Training Course during your first semester as an SI Leader
(1 credit Pass/Fail course)
 SI Leader Training course begins: Friday, August 28th from 12:30-4:00pm. & Saturday, August 29th from
9:00am – 4:00pm (lunch on your own from 11:30-12:30pm)
 Attend the designated class(es) regularly and assist in class as needed
 Market the SI Program initially for preferred SI session times; remain approachable and continually promote SI
throughout the semester.
 Hold four one-hour study sessions each week
 Communicates proactively with SI Program staff and faculty partner in a timely manner
 Develop content and study skills materials to use in SI sessions; complete Session Plan Templates throughout the
semester
 Interact and collaborate with the faculty member on a weekly basis
 Maintain accurate attendance records and turn into the SI Office on a weekly basis
 Attend SI Program meetings and training sessions throughout the semester
 Observe fellow SI Leaders and provide feedback each semester
 Provide effective academic assistance to participating students

 Interested in working and learning from others with different perspectives and backgrounds than your own
Position Qualifications:
 Must have attended NAU Mountain Campus for at least 1 academic year
 Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; must have earned an A (preferred) or high B in the course you are
interested in supporting
 Faculty recommendation
Pay Rate: starting $9.25/hour
 Paid bi-weekly
 Position is for 10-11hrs/week

On a separate sheet of paper, please describe your interest in being an SI Leader as well as any prior tutoring or
teaching experience.
SI LEADER SELECTION CRITERIA:
1) Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; must have earned an A (preferred) or high B in the
course you are interested in supporting.
2) Faculty recommendation for the course you want to be an SI for
(faculty should email recommendation to Amy Larson)
3) Availability to attend courses and required SI Leader trainings, as well as scheduling SI Sessions to
accommodate students.
4) Required to enroll and attend a 1 credit SI Leader Training course during the fall 2015 semester. This
course will meet Monday evenings, from 5:30 – 7:30pm, for the first 9 weeks of the semester
(excluding Labor Day) 8/28/15-10/26/15. Course begins of Friday, 8/28 and Saturday, 8/29.
If you meet the above criteria, SI staff will contact you for an interview. The definitive list of SI
courses/sections/professors may change up until the start of the semester. Students’ schedules are also subject to
change. Therefore, we may not be able to guarantee you the position even if you are selected through the
interview process. We will do our very best to accommodate you within the structure of our program. Thank
