Subject: new NSF and NIH expectations for research integrity training
For any of you who submit proposals through the National Science Foundation (or proposals supporting
the training of students through the National Institutes of Health) – there are IMPORTANT NEW
REQUIREMENTS regarding the training of investigators, staff and students in research ethics, recently
instituted by the federal government. We have made arrangements for a convenient, free, and
nationally-accepted way of providing and verifying the ethics training.
If you fall into this group (involved with NSF support), please read the attached RCR (Responsible
Conduct of Research) announcement for an explanation of the requirements and the research ethics
courses; feel free to contact Paula Garcia McAllister (paula.garcia@nau.edu) in the Office of the Vice
President for Research with questions. If you are curious about the exact wording of the requirements
from NSF’s Grant Proposal Guide (just revised), see the second attachment (“Certification…”). Our office
is ready to assist you in meeting this latest addition to the expectations and responsibilities for
investigators and grant-seekers.
