Philosophy Department Colloquium Series Matthew Goodwin Philosophy Department Northern Arizona University Presents: A Philosophy of Light and Space: James Turrell’s Roden Crater Art Project Thursday, September 19th Liberal Arts Building, Room 136 3:45 – 5:00 pm Roden Crater is a cinder cone volcano within sight of Sunset Crater between Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona. It is a place of great natural beauty with views of the San Francisco volcano field, Grand Canyon, Grand Falls, and Painted Desert. Here, for the past 40 years, artist James Turrell has built dramatic “sky spaces,” rooms and tunnels with openings oriented toward celestial and atmospheric phenomena. The place invites visitors to witness their ways of seeing and to question their place in the cosmos. This talk will introduce some of the intriguing philosophical issues that Turrell’s art makes us confront. For more information, please contact the Philosophy Department at 928-523-2648.
