Report # FIPP Activity Report Funded by the Basic Skills Initiative Name Jackie Freedman Date 11/06/09 FIPP Partner Matt Cheung Section #5000, ART 1 Activity /Strategy Feedback/Evaluation hand out of 32 day Commitment Category 4 Briefly describe the activity/strategy. 1. Introduction I pointed out that it is important to continue the 32 Day Commitment even though the Commitment had effectively ended. In order to help them continue their commitment to reading from their text, I told them it would be good to reflect on this activity and understand what it had contributed to their success in ART 1. 2. Set up & Supplies Hand-out of 7 questions to help them reflect on their 32 Day commitment to read from their texts. 3. Directions Students were asked to reflect on their experience of the 32 Day commitment by writing out the answers to the questions on the evaluation of the 32 Day Commitment handout. 4. Conclusion I think this was valuable for them and for me, since I was able to get a fuller understanding of what they felt was good about the exercise and also what did not resonate with them. What worked well? It was important for them to reflect on their commitment to read from the book. Reflecting on the exercise helped many of them to realize that their study habits need to improve. What would you change? I think this reflection might have been good in a silent partner back and forth writing discussion, or in partner discussion for a few minutes so that they could share their experiences with each other. Perhaps, this would allow them to realize that everyone struggles with keeping their commitments and maybe share some tips for developing good study techniques/habits. Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? I think so. Many students stated that if they had not "reflected" on the 32 Day Commitment they would not have realized that they needed to continue reading from their text after the exercise itself had ended. Please describe any student learning outcomes/changes that you observed after the implementation of the activity/strategy. Although it is not a student learning outcome, reading from the text and keeping up with required reading is important to being able to meet the SLO's for the class.
