Discussion/Action Items Program Review – Natividad It was noted Program Review has not been looked at since 2006 when Dr. Storer did an extensive review process. One suggestion which came out of this process was that not enough focus was placed on positive recognition for faculty and staff. In an effort to address this, the council was told that if anyone had some positive stories regarding their area, to please forward them to Rory so he could share and pass them on to the administration. To begin this new practice, LeValley Pattison was introduced to the council and recognized her for being awarded Coach of the Year by the California Community College Coaches Association. LeValley has been a full-time faculty member for the last 11 years. Her students have gone on to be very successful in their endeavors. Wellness Program The Department of Health Sciences and Athletics in conjunction with the Fitness Center will be introducing the “Warrior Wellness Challenge.” This fitness competition will be comprised of various Division Council April 18, 2012 Page 2 offices across campus who will compete for points against each other in hopes of improving their health and well-being. o Monthly prizes will be awarded. o Rules and procedures will be forthcoming. o Competitors will choose a team name. Stop-Smoking Program Looking at making a smoking safety zone. The committee convened another meeting to follow up with things. Syllabus Template A new template will be sent out soon for everyone to use to assist them in having continuity for all syllabi in the division. It was asked that everyone look the template over and critique it. Fitness Brochure A new fitness brochure will be forthcoming with all the new information on the Fitness Center. o You don’t have to be a student to use the center as long as you sign up, fill out the proper paperwork, and pay $50 a semester. o The center will be open in the summer. Injuries It was asked that the council relay to their constituents to please keep the dean informed when any accidents happen involving faculty, students, or staff. The current procedure does not keep key people properly informed. Curriculum Mark distributed a current listing of courses in HSA that have not been reviewed in the last six years. Beginning this fall, classes deemed “to be arranged” will begin to be reviewed to make sure they are in compliance. Mark expressed importance in getting the plan together as to what the division will be tackling next year regarding curriculum. All courses must be identified by the end of spring. Contemporary Health 5 – Women’s Health Issues is in the works for the next academic year. A reminder will be sent out today by the office to remind originators with any current curriculum that they need to send it to the DCC by Monday, April 23. Submission of the courses to the College Curriculum Committee is due by April 30. Faculty were reminded to have all the information regarding their course offerings correct. If changes are made to the courses mid-stream, the state will not fund us because we haven’t advertised the class properly. Area Reports Respiratory Care – Sinopoli Louis did a respiratory rally which was put on locally for people with chronic lung disease. Student Learning Outcomes – Serr Russell reported that everything is excellent and going well. – Rory A reminder was noted for anyone due to march during commencement to make sure they have ordered their cap and gown attire early. Golf Classic – Barbone The 25th Annual Warrior Athletics Golf Classic will be held at Los Verdes Golf Course on Friday, May 11. The proceeds will be used for academic support services, tutoring, equipment, supplies, facility improvements, staff development, and other ongoing needs throughout the year. Hall of Fame – Natividad The Athletic Hall of Fame will be held on Thursday, May 17. This year the venue has been changed to the Ayres Hotel which will be a benefit to the program. Counseling – Ishikawa Janice noted that this year she has had less than 70 applications for Nursing. Usually she receives 80 to 100 applications. o She is trying to analyze why it is so low this year. o With applications at such a low rate, students now stand a good chance to get into the program. Compton – Natividad Chris Richardson who is the Compton representative has taken a coaching job at Cerritos College. He has graciously offered to still assist with things here until a replacement can be found for him. Academic Awards – Natividad Everything is moving forward with the Academic Awards. It was suggested that we need to fine tune this process and have a more accurate process. It was noted that instructors/directors should be aware of who are their top students. This would help the process be more accurate. Monthly Report – Natividad Rory distributed a copy of the monthly report for April 2012 for the council to review. He informed the council that if anyone saw something in error to please inform him. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 1:55 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 12 at 1 p.m. in ArtB 106. lmo
