Meeting Notes
January 7, 2009
Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, Maricela Vital
A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at
10:30 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 2.
Review of Minutes from November 7, 2008 meeting
Minutes approved as written.
Department Updates
o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan:
Maritime Training Classes
1) Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping class (STCW) filled
for January 27th
2) No other maritime classes scheduled
Solar Power/Wind Generating
1) Roberto now attending class to become Certified for Solar Power installation
2) Will apply for multi-million dollar grant after Roberto becomes Certified
Prisons
1) 24-hour Wheel Chair Repair class began Dec. 22nd at Terminal Island.
WpLRC submitted bid for 5-year Contract to teach AutoCad at Terminal
Island. We have held the Contract in the past and expect to be awarded the
contract.
2) Parenting Contract that was to start on Jan 5th at LA Metro Detention Center
is now on hold due to a minor issue with our present instructor. We await the
instructor’s approval.
3) The Parenting Contract at Terminal Island is also on hold awaiting approval of
the instructor.
4) The Welding Contract at Terminal Island is also on hold awaiting the approval
of new instructor, John Grimes.
CTE Initiative Hub Grant
1) The WpLRC was awarded a 5-year Contract from the Chancellor’s Office via
the U.S. Department of Labor. The amount of the funding for 2009 is
$187,500. The goal of the project is to promote the Economic Workforce
Development model of integrating business and emerging industries with
Career Technical Education (CTE) programs and courses provided in high
schools.
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:
1) The first graduation for the Fasteners Certificate program will be on January
23rd. The entire class of 25 students will be graduating.

2) David Gonzales will hire a math instructor to teach a prep class for the
Fasteners’ program incoming students who did not do well in the math test.
3) David is now working on acquiring additional grants and on CACT and
Collaborative grant reports.
o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia:
1) The Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) grant will be sponsoring 20
students from Banning High to go to an International Business competition in
Oakland, CA.
2) The International Trade Compliance Institute (ITCI) advisory board meeting
will be held on January 15, 2009.
3) Maurice Kogon and Bronwen Madden are working on a website for the ITCI.
This website will be a wealth of resources for all topics related to international
compliance.
o Small Business Development Center – Accreditation was conducted in
November. There are things to work on. At the close-out meeting it was
acknowledged that Long Beach was a relatively new lead center and still is in the
initial phase of development. The system as a whole should be accredited. The
final report is forthcoming.
o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital:
Employee Training Panel (ETP)
1) The ETP program is slowly picking-up momentum.
 Adel Wiggins Group concluded their GD&T training on November 25 th and
they are also scheduled to start a new class soon.
 Nearfield Systems, Inc. is currently receiving Frontline Leadership/Stress
Management training through 1/23/09.
 Weber Metals is scheduled to begin Blueprint Reading training on January
12th for 10 weeks.
2) We submitted contracts for Board Approval for Adel Wiggins Group (GD&T),
DHX (Applied Strategic Planning/Continuous Improvement), and Kirkhill
Elastomers (Continuous Improvement, Spanish, Computer Training, Shop
Math and Blueprint Reading).
3) We are in the process of sending contracts to the following customers; L-3
Communications (FLL/Continuous Improvement), Pentel (Computer Training,
Business Skills, and Continuous Improvement) and Toyota.
4) Cristallea is working with City of Torrance in an effort to provide them with
training.
5) ETP is conducting an on-site audit at Nearfield Systems on Friday, January
9th. Cristallea and Maricela will meet the auditor at customer’s site.
Contract Education
1) City of Redondo Beach started their ten, eight-hour module training on
10/22/08 and will continue through 07/30/09.
2) Cristallea will be attending a one week course at the Center for Creative
Leadership starting on January 12th.

3) Full Capacity Marketing, Inc. has been hired to take a strategic look at our
BTC marketing efforts.
California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)
1) CAHSEE Grant program is in full swing. Instructors/counselors/recruiter are
being hired. The postcard and brochure have been printed and are currently
being mailed to potential candidates. Denise DiPasquale has recruited 35
students so far.
o Workforce Development – Espie Corrado:
Career Placement Services
CPS will be having their Green Job Internship and Information Fair on March 19,
2009. There are ongoing resume writing and interviewing skills workshops every
month.
Career Technical Education
CTE is continuing work on the CTE catalog.
El Camino Language Academy
(ECLA) is accepting applications for the Spring semester. Destyn LaPorte
expects between 50-60 new students.
Women in Industry and Technology/Career Technical Education
1) (WIT/CTE) have recruited 20 women to register at Compton Education Center
in hopes that they will be eligible for the Fastener Program.
2) WIT had a Peer Support Group Meeting Workshop on December 3 rd on the
topic “Learn How to Reduce Your Debt and Get out of Credit” in the cafeteria.
3) WIT is also accepting applications from current WIT students for $1,000
scholarships in partnership with Southern California Edison and Kinder
Morgan.
4) In December, WIT and Nissan gave tool kits to 10 WIT students who had
been recommended by their instructors. The kits were presented at a
luncheon.
5) Cathy Brinkman, Karen Hess and Alicia Zambrano will be attending Career
Pathways Certification Training for Tech Prep this month at Citrus College.
This is in partnership with Centinela Valley Union High School District.
Audits of VTEA
1) Inventory labeling will be done this year for assets purchased with VTEA
funds. Time certification will go back to 2007-08 to create reports and will
update 2008-09.
Discussion
o Safety Issues: Always be aware of possible safety and security problems
concerning our building and buildings on campus.
o Budget Updates: There were cuts made last year based on the Governor’s
first proposal. The Governor’s new proposal is not cutting community
colleges as much as first proposed.
