REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON ATHLETICS MEETING OF NOVEMBER 9, 2005 There was some discussion of the membership of the committee. There are changes to the IAAB membership in progress, and Dick Hall has stepped aside from his long-time membership on the IAAB. It is not clear who from the IAAB will also be on the committee. There also should be a student on the committee. There was a discussion of potential projects relating to the history of sports at the university. The university archivist has some information, and there is some information in the athletics department. A current display in the lobby of the Science Library does mention some history of sports at the university. Projects could get overwhelming; thus it was suggested to go slowly. An initial project might include starting with one sport, perhaps one such as swimming which is not currently a team sport at the university. Other possibilities include having a display on the history of football at the university for Homecoming or a display on the history of basketball at the university for the Big Purple Growl. Questions also were raised about the potential location of such a display. It was also commented that perhaps the athletics department could supply some relatively recent material for the university archivist to preserve. On the recreation side, there recently was a popular dodgeball fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. A recreation mission statement is being developed. One suggestion was to mention activities which students could pursue throughout their lifetimes. Another suggestion was to eventually put this mission statement on the Web. A proposed compact plan includes hiring someone who can help the students with the intramural program. For the next meeting, the committee plans to discuss how to encourage faculty and staff attendance at athletic events and to look at recent efforts on this issue.
