El Camino College
Facilities Steering Committee
December 3, 2003
Present: Janet Clarke, Michael D’Amico, Thomas Fallo, Pam Fees, Bob Gann, Tom
Lew, Donna Manno, David Miller, Barbara Perez, Susan Pickens, Cameron Samimi,
Angela Simon, Luukia Smith, Arvid Spor, and Julie Stewart.
1. Environmental Impact Report
a. The Draft Environmental Impact Report and the El Camino College
Facilities Master Plan Response to Public Comments are complete and will
go to the Board on December 15, 2003. These documents will also be
available in the Library, President’s Office and also on our website.
b. Arvid Spor, Hugh Brownlee and Bob Gann had a favorable meeting with El
Camino Village residents. We do not expect any of them in attendance at
the Board meeting.
2. President Fallo had another meeting with the coaches. They stated that the
document presented to the Facilities Steering Committee was not a proposal but
more of an idea paper. It would have cost an additional $5K to have architects
price the project. There will be two additional meetings with P.E. staff. The dates
are Thursday, December 11th at 2:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 17th at 2:00
p.m.
3. We are still on target and on budget for the Natural Science project. The target
date is April/May 2004 on the first plans.
4. Status Report – Measure E – Current Ideas
a. We have refined the dollar amounts by scaling back new building costs to
accommodate lower enrollment figures.
b. Building renovation costs by scope (A-F) were distributed to committee.
All projects, except replacements, are posted as scope C.
c. Social Sciences and Business buildings will be renovated.
d. We will go ahead with the Health Occupations building.
e. Humanities building will be replaced.
f. Student Services Center will be replaced.
5. We have received funding from the State in the past but we cannot depend upon it
for the future. The previous State support will probably not be the same in the
future.
6. Six architects were interviewed. We hope to narrow them down and bring to the
Board in February 2004.
7. Harmon Nelson Designs Inc. made a presentation of various styles of signage for
El Camino College. Any suggestions or comments should be given to Bob Gann.
8. Arvid Spor distributed Project and Planning Timelines.
Future Meetings
The next Facilities Steering Committee meeting will be Wednesday, February 4, 2004
from 1-3:00 p.m. in Library 202.
