NOTES – 13 October 2008
Assessment of Learning Committee (ALC)
Present: S. Donnell, J. Farias, L. Gallucci, D. Goldberg, K. Holt, L. Kjeseth, R. Lewis, K.
Laureano-Ribas, J. Simon, C. Striepe, D. Thompson
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m.
II. Assessment of Student Learning Week
Due to preparations for the Accreditation Site Visit, an ALC week will not be scheduled
during the Fall 2008 semester. L. Kjeseth reported that he has been working with J. Young
and Q. Chapman to schedule meetings where faculty can drop in for an open forum to
discuss the curriculum and SLO process. An email informing faculty and staff will be
forthcoming. Plans for a Spring 2009 forum will be discussed at a future meeting.
III. Accreditation and Revisions to the Plan
A. Sharing SLOs and Assessment Results with Students
L. Kjeseth, J. Simon, L. Gallucci, H. Storms and R. Bergeman met with accreditation
team members to discuss the following questions/concerns:
1. How are SLOs communicated to students? Are SLOs included in the syllabi?
2. How are the results of assessments shared with students? How are students
informed regarding the types of evaluation?
Discussion was held with regard to meeting with the ASO and informing students about
SLOs and assessment. The committee agreed that it would be appropriate to invite a
student member to attend the ALC meetings.
B. “Complete sets of SLOs Proposals” for Courses, Programs, Degrees and Certificates
The team was complimentary about the process but expressed concern about emphasizing
the complete cycle and also reaching efficiency by 2012. The team thought all the work
accomplished so far is worthwhile but was not fitting a regular pattern. Now the plan is
to make sure that a cycle has happened or at least have one SLO tied to each program,
degree and certificate.
C. Adjunct Instructor Issue
Since there are many courses that are exclusively taught by adjunct faculty, they are the
only ones qualified to write an SLO. Discussion was held regarding compensation for
adjunct faculty who fall in this category. If compensation is not possible, it was noted
that it would be difficult to meet Accrediting Commission expectations if the number of
courses taught by adjuncts will never have an SLO, and it would be unfair to penalize the
College. One option suggested is developing an MOU in which the District and AFT
would agree to pay adjunct faculty for work completed on the development of SLOs. It
would be helpful to know the number of classes that are taught exclusively by adjunct
and also an estimate of time it would take to write a realistic assessment.
D. CurricUNET
Discussion of this agenda item will take place at a future meeting.
E. Where SLOs live
