English Literature Current Event Criteria
This is an on-going project with an article due twice a month during the school year. A copy of
these instructions will be provided to every student in class:
World News/Current Event
You must read and report on current world/country events TWICE EVERY MONTH of each
semester. Articles may be obtained from magazines, newspapers, or from reliable, newsworthy
internet sources. (TMZ.com is not a reliable, newsworthy source.)
Please include a copy of the article with your report, stapled to the back. Include all of the
following information, in this order, for your report:
FIRST, put the title AND date of the article at the top of your paper.
1. Who wrote this article?
2. Name the SOURCE: the magazine, newspaper, or entire web address of internet article.
3. Name the main person or topic (WHO or WHAT) the article is about.
4. List 3-5 of the MOST interesting facts you found out from this article. Each fact should be a
complete sentence. (Hint: These will likely be your justifications used in the next step. You will
cite these using in-text citations when referencd!)
5. Write a nice, detailed explanation (AT LEAST 200 words with a clear topic sentence, details, and
a conclusion) that gives both a summary and YOUR PERSONAL REACTION to this article;
explain whether it makes a valid point, why this topic is a necessary topic or why it is not, the
tone of the author/article, and if there are inferences, etc. Justify why the article is important to
you. Utilize facts from the article to justify its importance socially/morally/politically. Cite the
article when you justify.
6. Provide a works cited for the article used.
Your assignment must be typed. Your info must be in the #1-6 order as listed above.
Spelling and grammar are essential elements for full credit, and MLA format will be used
in the body of your reference paragraph. Proper MLA format is necessary for full credit.
Use the MLA guide posted on my website to assist you with proper formatting!
