Absent (unexcused): J. Means
Also Present: P. Kidwell-Udin, G. Miranda, K. Townsend
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Young called the meeting to order at 2:35 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
B. Perez moved that the minutes of the March 9, 2004, College Curriculum Committee
meeting be approved as written and S. Dowden seconded the motion. Chair Young noted
that a correction was necessary for the Proposed Curriculum Changes section of the
minutes as Dance 18Labcd was not being inactivated but was being deleted from the
curriculum. As there were no further corrections, the Chair called for a vote and the
minutes were approved as corrected.
CHAIR’S REPORT
J. Young reported that on March 16th, the Academic Senate approved the recently revised
Article VIII, College Curriculum Committee, of the Academic Senate Constitution.
Chair Young added that the revisions to this section were primarily editorial and did not
affect the operations of the CCC. Continuing with her report, the Chair announced that
the CCC website was now available and that the address is www.elcamino.edu/ccc. She
informed the committee that CCC meeting dates, CCC contacts, frequently asked
questions, and resource links can be found on the website. J. Young said that the
subcommittee will continue to develop the website and that any suggestions from CCC
members would be welcomed.
VICE PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC AFFAIRS' REPORT
V. Rapp, the Vice President of Academic Affairs’ designee, stated she had no report for
today’s meeting.

CURRICULUM REVIEW
PROPOSALS REVIEWED BY CCC CHAIR AND VICE PRESIDENT – ACADEMIC
AFFAIRS:
J. Young directed the committee to the justifications, provided by her and N. Hata, for the
adjustments to the course outlines of record for the “parent” courses of the recently
inactivated “L” courses as well as to the justifications for the inactivation of Physical
Education 403abcd and 406abcd. C. Fitzsimons, CCC representative for Fine Arts,
voiced concern with approving the adjustments to the outlines. She stated that she could
not vote on these proposals as the issue of student attendance at scheduled events was
discussed at a Fine Arts division meeting not a Division Curriculum Committee meeting.
Continuing, C. Fitzsimons said she could speak to the four Art courses on the list and
then provided a revision to Section IV of the course outline for Art 1. A. Collette then
informed the CCC that she had contacted Fine Arts Dean T. Lew on the afternoon of
March 22nd to verify that the division’s proposals were ready for presentation to the CCC.
Dean Lew confirmed that they were. Chair Young reminded members that because of
the large volume of curriculum involved, the committee had agreed to the review process
of the Chair and the Vice President of Academic Affairs providing recommendations for
action instead of members receiving individual proposals. C. Fitzsimons noted she was
in agreement with the process but was concerned that no Fine Arts Division Curriculum
Committee meeting had been held to finalize the adjustments to the outlines. Discussion
then ended and K. Key moved that the CCC approve the 91 course outline adjustments
and the inactivation of the two Physical Education courses. J. Siddiqui seconded the
motion. The motion carried with ten in favor, nine against, and one abstention.
HEALTH SCIENCES AND ATHLETICS PROPOSALS:
K. Townsend introduced P. Kidwell-Udin of the Nursing Department who explained the
proposed revisions for the School Health Clerk Certificates of Competence and
Completion. P. Kidwell-Udin said that Nursing 95/96abcd, Cooperative Career
Education, was being removed from the list of restrictive electives because it has a
prerequisite of Nursing 60B. The School Health Clerk certificates were not designed for
students in the Nursing Program; therefore, a decision was reached that students earning
certificates were better served by the remaining elective courses. W. Killingsworth then
moved, and K. Key seconded, that the School Health Clerk certificates be approved as
revised. The motion carried.
BEHAVIORAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES PROPOSALS:
G. Miranda asked P. Kidwell-Udin to remain in attendance inasmuch as she not only
represented the Nursing Department but also the Childhood Education Department and
was instrumental in the development of the new option, Special Education Assistant, for
the Childhood Education Certificates of Competence and Completion. During the brief
discussion of the new option, P. Kidwell-Udin provided a correction to the Child
Development courses required to be completed at El Camino College. It was also noted
that this new option must be approved by the Chancellor’s Office before certificates
could be awarded. The CCC then turned to the proposal for revisions to the Program

Administration option of the Childhood Education certificates. G. Miranda advised the
committee of minor corrections to the proposal then, as there were no questions,
B. Perez moved that the CCC approve the new option and the revised option for the
Childhood Education Certificates of Competence and Completion. C. Somin seconded
the motion, which carried.
ELECTION OF CCC CHAIR
A. Collette reminded the CCC that its bylaws state that the election of a CCC Chair is to
occur no later than the 12th week of the spring semester during the seated Chair’s first
year of office and that the election is to be coordinated by the Curriculum Advisor and an
election committee, consisting of two voting CCC members, appointed by the CCC
Chair. Curriculum Advisor Collette then asked Chair Young to appoint the two CCC
members. J. Young asked J. Siddiqui and B. Perez if they would be willing to be on the
committee and both said they would serve. With the election committee in place,
A. Collette asked for nominations from the floor. C. Striepe nominated J. Young, who
accepted the nomination. As there were no other names put forth, the nominations were
closed. The election committee informed those present it would develop a process for the
election.
CURRICULUM COLLOQUIUM
K. Key reported that in February he attended a Curriculum Colloquium sponsored by the
statewide Academic Senate. He referred CCC members to his summary of the meeting,
which was included in the day’s packet, then explained that the statewide Senate is
investigating the feasibility of revising the English and Mathematics requirements for the
associate degree. The revisions center on requiring students to complete English 1A and
intermediate algebra or the equivalent in order to earn a degree. A revision to the English
requirement would not affect El Camino College as English 1A is already a degree
requirement. However, a revision to the mathematics requirement would affect the
College because elementary algebra is currently the degree requirement. K. Key added
that the discussions at the colloquium included a debate on whether these proposed
changes should be mandatory for all community colleges or if local district determination
would be allowed. Continuing with his report, K. Key said that the statewide Senate will
continue to discuss this issue at its Spring Plenary Session and at the Summer Curriculum
Institute. Then, if appropriate, the Senate will vote on the issue at its Fall 2004 Plenary
Session. J. Young added that she will be attending the plenary sessions and the
Curriculum Institute and will keep the CCC apprised of decisions reached.
CCC FORM 9
The committee reviewed the draft of the revised CCC Form 9, Curriculum Review
Procedures. The revisions included clarification that division CCC representatives are
responsible for verifying division proposals meet Title 5 regulations as well as
requirements of the Chancellor’s Office and El Camino College. During the brief
discussion of the draft, the committee also revised the title of the form. The new title,
CCC MINUTES 03/23/04
4
Proposals for Curriculum Review, better reflects the intent of the form. Chair Young said
the subcommittee which developed the form will incorporate the new revisions then bring
the form to the CCC for final approval.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
J. Young reminded CCC members that they earn eight hours of flex credit for serving on
the committee. L. Beckett-Lemus remarked that she had been told by D. Manno of the
Staff Development Office that this was not necessarily so. K. Key, past CCC Chair,
stated that last year it was agreed that CCC representatives would receive flex credit
because of the rigorous demands of the committee. Chair Young stated she has not been
formally notified that flex credit for service on the CCC has been revoked and that she
will contact the Staff Development Office to resolve the issue.
At 3:10 p.m., C. Somin moved, and W. Killingsworth seconded, that the meeting be
adjourned. The motion carried.
