2. Course Description
Introduces nursing care for semi-acute or convalescent clients in
the hospital, long-term care, or home setting. Prepares nurse

5. General Course Objectives
Prepares nurse aides to work in hospital, long-term care, home or clinic setting.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to
a. Describe the health care delivery system in Hawaii with special emphasis on agencies and
facilities that care for the aged.
b. Describe professional conduct, language, and dress.
c. Discuss caring for the aged and special needs populations with emphasis on mental health
and social service needs; care of cognitively impaired residents,
d. Describe the role of the nurse aide as a member of the health care team under the
supervision of the Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, or physician.
e. Discuss infection control; ways microorganisms are spread, and standard precautions.
f. Identify body systems and major organs in each system.
g. Use basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
h. Perform basic nursing and patient care skills safely.
i. Demonstrate infection control in the clinical setting.
j. Perform selected therapeutic nursing care skills safely.
k. Implement effective communication skills.
l. Demonstrate safety and emergency procedures.
m. Describe patient/resident rights
