This unit standard is intended for people employed in a forestry
helicopter logging operation
People credited with this unit standard are able to: measure
tree stems and calculate best log combination for helicopter
lifting capacity; and record log details and location on log
marking sheet and log tag.

This unit standard must be assessed on-job.
Definitions
Accepted industry practice – approved codes of practice and standardised
procedures accepted by the wider forestry industry as examples of best practice.
Worksite procedures – documented procedures used by the organisation carrying out
the work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. They may include but are not
limited to – standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment
operating procedures, quality assurance procedures, housekeeping standards,
procedures to comply with legislative and local body requirements.
Helicopter logging operations are subject to the provisions of the Civil Aviation Rules
(see http://www.caa.govt.nz) in accordance with the Civil Aviation Act 1990 and any
subsequent amendments.

1.1
Measuring equipment is maintained in good condition and is calibrated in
accordance with accepted industry practice.
1.2
Felled stems are assessed for hazards before attempting measurement in
accordance with accepted industry practice.
Range
branches or stems under tension or compression, overhead

Felled stems are assessed for merchantable recovery, and length and mid-girth
or mid-diameter measurements are made in accordance with worksite
procedures.
1.4
Weight calculations for log combinations are made to optimise machine
capability and merchantable recovery.

weight conversion factors for species, visual appraisal of log
condition.
1.5
Logs are measured and cuts marked in accordance with worksite procedures.
1.6
Cuts are made in accordance with accepted industry practice.
1.7
Soundness of cut logs is confirmed before further action is taken.

Record log details and location on log marking sheet and log tag.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Felled stems are identified and tree number and species recorded.
2.2
Log details are recorded on the log marking sheet and on the log tag in
accordance with worksite procedures.

accepted industry practice.

Gap location and details are recorded on marking sheet in accordance with
