Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: select and
use hand tools to perform wood manufacturing operations;
select and use portable power tools to perform wood
manufacturing operations; and complete preventative
maintenance of hand tools and portable power tools used to
perform wood manufacturing operations.

Explanatory notes
1
The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard:
a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed
the code) for personal, product and worksite health and safety, and must meet the
obligations required under current legislation, including Electricity (Safety)
Regulations 2010 and associated Codes of Practice, the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their
subsequent amendments.
b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This
includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities,
events, and decisions.
c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be
in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing and method.

Definitions
Power transmission components refer to extension leads and associated portable
electrical safety devices.
Preventative maintenance refers to maintenance that does not require the services of
a qualified service technician.
Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or
other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to – ways of
managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production,
and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures,
company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Select and use hand tools to perform wood manufacturing operations.
Range
hand tools may include but are not limited to – measuring tape, hammer, hand
drill, screwdrivers, end cutting nippers, adjustable spanner, ring and open end
spanners, allen keys, socket set, pliers, tin snips, hacksaw, hand saw, string
line.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Hand tools are selected and used to meet identified job requirements in
accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
1.2
Use of tools is consistent with safety of the user and bystanders, and effective
use of materials.
1.3
Safety equipment is obtained and worn in accordance with manufacturer’s
requirements and worksite policies and procedures.
Outcome 2
Select and use portable power tools to perform wood product manufacturing operations.
Range
may include – circular saw, jig-saw, drill, belt sander, disc grinder;
evidence of two is required.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Portable power tool selection and set-up meet requirements of the work and
conforms to manufacturer’s recommendations.
2.2
Power source and protective device set-up meets the requirements of the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and the Electricity (Safety)
Regulations 2010 and associated Codes of Practice.
2.3
Portable power tools are used in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
2.4
Use of tools is consistent with safety of the user and bystanders, and effective
use of materials.
2.5
Safety equipment is obtained and worn in accordance with manufacturer’s
requirements and worksite policies and procedures.

Complete preventative maintenance of hand tools and portable power tools used to
perform wood manufacturing operations.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Cutting edges and points are maintained to manufacturer’s recommendations.
3.2
Portable power tools are maintained in safe working condition.
includes but is not limited to – free of rust and dirt, lubricated, in
sound mechanical and electrical condition.
Range
3.3
Power connections and safety features are maintained in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations.
3.4
Damaged and faulty hand and power tools and power transmission components
are removed from service for repair or replacement.
