Explanatory notes 1 The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard: a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed the code) for personal, product and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and its subsequent amendments. b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions. c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing and method. 2 Definitions Manufacturer’s instructions are instructions provided by manufacturers of substances, equipment, and machinery used in solid wood manufacturing. These instructions may include details on safe and correct handling, set up, use and storage of substances and/or details on substance properties. Examples are labels on substance containers, product data sheets, and operator’s manuals. Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Hazards associated with toothing circular saws are identified and actions to be taken to isolate, minimise or eliminate the hazards are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 1.2 hazards may include but are not limited to – moving equipment, grinding wheel disintegration, loose grinding wheel, exposure to grinding coolant, noise. Safe work practices associated with toothing circular saws are identified and used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and legislative requirements. Range practices may include but are not limited to – isolation procedures, lock-outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, wearing appropriate safety equipment. Outcome 2 Prepare circular saws for toothing. Evidence requirements 2.1 Saws and saw blanks are selected to meet customer specifications. Range 2.2 Toothing equipment is checked for wear, and is lubricated according to manufacturer’s instructions and/or worksite policies and procedures. Range 2.3 cutting equipment, scriber, tooth punch machine or tooth indexer, grinding machine, benching equipment, safety equipment. Saws and saw blanks are pre-formed in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 2.4 diameter, gauge, steel type, rip or cross cut. pre-formed – stripped or cut to required diameter (bore drilled and/or punched), bore size tolerance of plus or minus 0.10 mm. Tooth points (gullet depth) and hook angles are calculated to meet customer requirements, conform to saw diameter, and are scribed to customer requirements and/or worksite policies and procedures. Evidence requirements 3.1 Forming equipment is set-up and operated in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 3.2 tooth punch machine or tooth indexer. Tooth profiles are formed to meet customer requirements. Range 3.3 grinding, punching or cutting. Saw blade is checked for punching damage and remedial action is taken to meet customer requirements and worksite policies and procedures. Outcome 4 Profile circular saw blades. Evidence requirements 4.1 Profile equipment is set-up and operated in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range automatic tooth grinder. 4.2 Tooth shape and gullet depth meet customer specifications, and are even for the whole saw. 4.3 Saw is free of grinding burns.
