Classification Solid Wood Manufacturing > Saw Doctoring Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard: a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed the code) for personal, product and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments. b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions. c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing and method. 2 Definition Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Manage hazards associated with benching circular saws. Evidence requirements 1.1 Hazards associated with benching circular saws are identified and actions to be taken to isolate, minimise or eliminate the hazards are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Safe work practices associated with benching circular saws are identified and used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and legislative requirements. Range practices may include but are not limited to – isolation procedures, lock-outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, wearing appropriate safety equipment; evidence of five is required. Outcome 2 Prepare circular saws for benching. Evidence requirements 2.1 Saw and work areas are cleaned of all foreign matter that could affect benching operations. 2.2 Benching equipment and tools are checked for wear and alignment and are lubricated according to manufacturer's specifications and/or worksite policies and procedures. Range 2.3 circular stretcher rolls, levelling block, heat tensioning unit, anvil and pad, tension gauge, marking stick, levelling rolls, hammers, straight edge, safety equipment. Saw is checked for defects and remedial action is taken in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range bent or broken teeth, saw cracks, twists. Outcome 3 Calibrate circular saw benching machinery. Evidence requirements 3.1 The tools and equipment used to align and calibrate benching machinery are identified and their main function is explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 3.2 measuring tools, alignment tools, specialist manufacturer’s tools. Benching machinery components are checked for wear in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range levelled, aligned. Outcome 4 Level circular saws. Evidence requirements 4.1 Circumferential and radial lumps are located and marked using a straight edge held at right angles to the saw face. 4.2 Lumps are removed in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 4.3 correct hammer or stretcher rolls. Saw level conforms to full diameter straight edge. Outcome 5 Tension circular saws. Evidence requirements 5.1 Tension requirements are located and marked. Range 5.2 straight edge or tension gauge. Tension is altered to meet tension requirements. Range at least one of – hammer, stretcher rolls, heat unit. 5.3 Location of tension conforms to a given tension gauge or straight edge. 5.4 Tyre, body, and collar areas of saw are identified. 5.5 Overall tension shows a uniform light spacing to a full diameter straight edge.
