Purpose
This unit standard is for people working as corrections officers in a prison and
covers working in a specialist unit.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
–
define the purpose and operating requirements of a specialist prison
unit;
–
implement operational requirements in a specialist prison unit; and
–
maintain personal and team well-being in a specialist prison unit.

Reference to terms, procedures and specifications in this unit standard includes
documented procedures and specifications relevant to the workplace in which
assessment is carried out.

All work practices shall meet documented enterprise quality management
requirements, including the documentation of activities, events, and decisions.

In this unit standard, specialist units include but are not limited to: young offenders,
sex offenders, violent offenders, at risk, special needs, Kaupapa, remands,
assessment/reception.

Assessment should be against the documented national policies and procedures and
prison specific procedures.

Element 1
Define the purpose and operating requirements of a specialist prison unit.
Performance criteria
1.1
Specialist unit type, purpose and goals are explained in terms of prison
requirements.
1.2
Specialist unit operating process and procedures are explained in terms of
prison requirements.
Range
1.3
safety, security, humane containment.
Specialist unit prisoner type, offending characteristics, and triggers are defined
and explained in terms of prison requirements.

Element 2
Implement operational requirements in a specialist prison unit.

Performance criteria
2.1
Operating requirements are implemented in accordance with established unit
specific procedures and established prison policy and procedures.
2.2
External individuals and agencies required to help implement operating
requirements are identified and coordinated to ensure smooth implementation.

medical, chaplain, programmes manager, unit manager, external
services.
2.3
Changes in operational requirements are identified and procedures changed to
reflect changes in accordance with established procedures and required
timeframe.
2.4
Team member roles and functions are defined and implemented in accordance
with established unit operating requirements.
Element 3
Maintain personal and team well being in a specialist prison unit.

Performance criteria
3.1
Personal training requirements to work in specialist unit are identified and
solutions implemented with unit manager and other agencies in accordance
with established procedures to enhance personal performance.
3.2
Coping and support strategies are developed and implemented to ensure
personal mental and physical well being is maintained throughout work in
specialist unit.
3.3
Opportunities to support others in team are identified and implemented in
accordance with specialist unit requirements.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
