3 Definition

On-farm procedures – the verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for preparation and management of market pigs for transport and sale.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Select market pigs for sale.

Performance criteria

1.1 Pigs are selected in the weight range chosen with regard to meeting market requirements and maximising return.

1.2

Element 2

Pigs selected meet ASD requirements and are acceptable for transport in accordance with the welfare code.

Manage transport of market pigs to destination.

Performance criteria

2.1 Information is agreed with the receivers in accordance with on-farm procedures.

2.2

Element 3

Transport is organised to pick up pigs to ensure delivery to the destination at the agreed time.

Prepare market pigs for transport and sale.

Performance criteria

3.1 Timing of pigs' final feed before transporting is in accordance with on-farm procedures and the welfare code.

3.2 Pigs are moved to loadout area prior to transport arrival with minimal stress and without injury to pigs in accordance with the welfare code.

3.3 Pigs are identified prior to loading and transport to destination in accordance with on-farm procedures.

3.4 Sale details are recorded in accordance with on-farm procedures and legislative requirements.

3.5 Pigs are managed to ensure loading is carried out with minimal stress and without injury to pigs or handler(s).
