2449 version 6 Page 1 of 5 Scour wool Level 4 Credits 50 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the wool scouring industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and use wool scouring equipment to scour wool, identify problems in the operation of the equipment, produce product to the required quality, carry out minor maintenance and maintain records as required. Performance criteria 1.1 Operating sections of scour are identified and their function described. Range scour feeding system, feed hopper, opener, weighbelt, bowls, squeeze press, dryer. 1.2 Scour parts and scouring activities that are dangerous are identified and precautions to avoid them are described. 1.3 Safety and emergency procedures are demonstrated according to workplace and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) requirements. Element 2 Prepare scour for operation according to work instructions. Performance criteria 2.1 Bowls are prepared for scouring according to workplace procedure and work instructions. Range bowl water level, bowl temperature, circulation pumps, discharge. 2.2 Detergent supply and metering devices/pumps are set according to work instruction. 2.3 Chemicals are added according to work instructions and safety requirements. Range manual, metering devices. 2.4 Feed section is set to deliver wool throughput according to work instructions. 2.5 Dryer is checked and set according to work instructions. 2.6 Guards and other safety equipment are in place according to workplace and OSH requirement. Performance criteria 3.1 Scour sections are started in sequence according to workplace procedure. Range 3.2 feed section, hoppers, openers and weighbelt, bowls, dryer, opening and dusting. Scour conditions are monitored and adjustments made to operating conditions to meet quality and productivity targets. Range squeeze roller pressure and lapping, flowdown, rake and fork speeds, liquor condition, bowl temperatures, feed rate, scoured wool colour. 3.3 Detergent/chemical additions are checked to ensure that addition rates required by workplace operating procedures and work instructions are maintained. 3.4 Regain of wool is monitored and tested according to work instructions. 3.5 Grease levels are monitored and tested according to work instructions. 3.6 Mechanical operation of equipment is checked regularly to identify malfunctions. Range pumps, valves, rakes, squeeze press, hopper feed sheets, dryer, opening/dusting. Element 4 Identify, report and isolate variations in product. Range colour, entanglement, grease content, moisture content, brightness. Performance criteria 4.1 Types of variation in product quality that can occur in scouring are identified and causes described. 4.2 Variation in product quality is recognised during processing, steps are taken to isolate affected product and reported according to workplace practice. 4.3 All contaminants, and scoured wool that does not meet quality requirements, are recognised and removed. Performance criteria 5.1 Scour sections are stopped in sequence according to workplace procedure. Range 5.2 feed section, pumps and chemical addition, rakes, squeeze presses, dryer, opening and dusting. Scour and scour area are cleaned according to workplace practice. Range bowls, surrounding area, opener and duster screens. Element 6 Act on machine malfunctions and blockages. Performance criteria 6.1 Interruptions to wool flow are identified and their cause located. Range feed hopper, opener, squeeze press, dryer, opening/dusting. 6.2 Blockages are cleared quickly and according to operating procedures. 6.3 Machine malfunctions that are within ability and responsibility are fixed to standard required by workplace operating procedures. 6.4 Machine malfunctions that are not within ability and responsibility of operator to fix are reported according to workplace operating procedures. 6.5 Maintenance procedures are carried out according to workplace practice. Element 7 Take scoured wool samples. Performance criteria 7.1 Samples are drawn from production according to workplace practice. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
