People credited with this unit standard are able to define wool characteristics and classify wools according to these characteristics. Performance criteria 1.1 Wool samples are inspected and classified according to characteristics. Range breed, yield, colour, length, fineness, contaminants. Element 2 Inspect wool and sort into types. Performance criteria 2.1 Wool bale identity is confirmed with work instructions 2.2 Work area is prepared according to workplace procedures. Range holding areas/receptacles, lighting conditions. 2.3 Wool types of different specifications are sorted into separate holding areas/receptacles according to work instruction/product specification. 2.4 Records are maintained according to workplace requirement. 2.5 Off-sorts are weighed and recorded according to workplace requirement. Element 3 Identify machining requirements for wool. Performance criteria 3.1 Opening machinery is identified, operation described and advantages/disadvantages compared in terms of function and operation. Range equipment used in the workplace. 3.2 Machining required by wool being sorted is selected according to wool characteristics and machinery available in plant. 3.3 Machine settings identified for degree of opening according to work instructions. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
