NZQA Expiring unit standard 5380 version 8 Page 1 of 4 Title Demonstrate knowledge of dyehouse operation Level 5 Credits Purpose 40 This advanced unit standard is for people in the dyeing and finishing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: safety in the dyehouse; dye selection; colour fastness testing; shade matching; and chemical and dye effluent and disposal; and calculate the cost of dyeing. Classification Textiles Manufacture > Textile Dyeing and Finishing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Workplace safety practices and procedures must comply with the following Acts: Health and Safety in Employment (HSE) Act 1992; Resource Management Act 1991. 2 Competence must be demonstrated using chemicals, processes and machinery used in the workplace. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of safety in the dyehouse. Evidence requirements 1.1 Accident causes and risk factors are described in terms of dyehouse activities. Range 1.2 Safe use of dyestuffs is described in terms of dyehouse procedures. Range 1.3 contact with objects, over exertion and strain, machine accidents, falls, chemical, electrical, fire. building design, handling and weighing of dyes, function and use of protective clothing, function and use of general safety equipment, housekeeping, first aid. Safe use of chemicals is described in terms of dyehouse procedures. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard Range 1.4 5380 version 8 Page 2 of 4 storage conditions, handling and storage of incompatible chemicals, handling, weighing and mixing of chemicals, identification and use of warning labels and signs, disposal of chemicals and chemical containers. Dyehouse safe practice is described in terms of the requirements of the Health and Safety Employment Act 1992. Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of dye selection. Evidence requirements 2.1 Description identifies and explains factors that influence dye selection. Range 2.2 substrate, shade, metamerism, levelling, fastness, compatibility with other dyes, reproducibility, temperature, stability, pH stability, penetration, coverage, homogeneity, solubility, dispersion solubility, particle size, purity. Cost factors are described in terms of dye selection. Range cost of dye, cost of application, fastness properties, dyestuff strength. Outcome 3 Calculate the cost of dyeing. Evidence requirements 3.1 Dyeing costs are described in terms of expenses that contribute to direct and indirect costs. Range 3.2 direct – operator wages, material costs, energy costs, water costs, machine depreciation, operating costs; indirect – management and support staff costs, building operation and maintenance costs, financial and administrative costs. Calculation derives cost of dyeing. Range direct wages cost, direct materials cost, energy and water costs, indirect costs. Outcome 4 Demonstrate knowledge of colour fastness testing. Evidence requirements Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA Expiring unit standard 4.1 5380 version 8 Page 3 of 4 Colour fastness tests are described in terms of the method and equipment used. Range fastness to washing, fastness to light, fastness to rubbing, fastness to perspiration, use of blue scales, use of standard grey scale, use of grey scale for assessing staining. Outcome 5 Demonstrate knowledge of shade matching. Evidence requirements 5.1 Shade matching is described in terms of the process steps. Range 5.2 sample taking, sample preparation, comparison with standard, additions. List identifies factors to be investigated in off-shade and un-level dyeings. Range recipe, batch weight, chemical and dye type, chemical and dye calculations, chemical and dye weighing and dispensing, dyebath conditions, dyebath contaminants, raw materials. Outcome 6 Demonstrate knowledge of chemical and dye effluent and disposal. Evidence requirements 6.1 Safe disposal of dyes and chemicals is described in terms of dyehouse procedures. 6.2 Dyehouse practice is described in terms of the requirements of the Resource Management Act, 1991. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
