People credited with this unit standard are able to: control arc furnace process; control floor operations; and optimise arc furnace condition. Classification Steel Manufacturing > Steel Making Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. 3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Control arc furnace process. Evidence requirements 1.1 Monitoring and interpretation of output data enable control parameters to be adjusted to maintain technical process specifications. 1.2 Output steel meets company specifications for temperature, chemistry, and volume. 1.3 Melts are completed in time for scheduled tap times. Evidence requirements 2.1 Communication of process requirements to floor operators enables company documentation for floor operations to be completed in accordance with the production schedule. Range 2.2 process requirements include but are not limited to – tapping, additions, lancing, sampling, temperature testing. Communication of process requirements to other steelmaking areas enables supply of steel to meet production schedule. Range other steelmaking areas include but are not limited to – oxy blast vessel, caster, ladle treatment, ladle operators. 2.3 Operation of oxygen manipulation and burner is in accordance with company documentation. 2.4 Operation of carbon injection is in accordance with the company documentation. 2.5 Control and management of hot heel are in accordance with company documentation. Outcome 3 Optimise arc furnace condition. Range condition includes but is not limited to – of refractory lining, lance, mouth, taphole, roof, electrodes, cooling system, emissions control. Evidence requirements 3.1 Monitoring of arc furnace condition is carried out visually and by alarm system, and enables company documentation for maximising the productive life of the furnace to be achieved. 3.2 Organisation of any remedial action enables furnace utilisation requirements and furnace life to be achieved to company documentation. Range 3.3 remedial action includes but is not limited to – clean, replace, repair. Maintenance of slag foaming is in compliance with the set procedure.
