NZQA registered unit standard 9287 version 3 Page 1 of 4 Title Carry out a steel casting operation on the floor Level 2 Credits Purpose 14 This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare casting machine; operate casting machine; carry out steel quality operations; and tundish to mould shrouding device is set up and monitored. Classification Steel Manufacturing > Steel Making Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. 3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare casting machine. Evidence requirements 1.1 Checking, maintenance, and setting up of tundishes and associated equipment are carried out in accordance with company documentation. Range 1.2 tundishes and associated equipment includes but is not limited to – oxygen lances, temperature probes, samplers, collars, shrouds. Checking, maintenance, and setting up of dummy bars and moulds are carried out in accordance with company documentation. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 setting up includes but is not limited to – head set up, moulds packed, emergency space prepared, launders prepared. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 1.3 Checking, maintenance, and setting up of the secondary cooling system are carried out in accordance with company documentation. Range 1.4 9287 version 3 Page 2 of 4 checking includes but is not limited to – metallic build-up, machine and spray alignment. Checking, maintenance, and setting up of run out area equipment are carried out in accordance with company procedures. Range run out area equipment includes but is not limited to – gas torches, run out rolls. Outcome 2 Operate casting machine. Evidence requirements 2.1 Attachment of services to ladles is carried out in accordance with company documentation when the ladle is ready to be opened and enables the commencement and continuation of casting operation. Range services include but are not limited to – shroud, hydraulics, air. 2.2 Synthetic slag layer is formed in accordance with company documentation and ensures that oxidation occurs. 2.3 Monitoring and adjustment of lubrication are carried out in accordance with company documentation and enables casting operation to be carried out without steel breakouts. 2.4 Slag inclusion is reduced to company quality standards. 2.5 Mould build-up meets company specifications. 2.6 Performance of tundish level control is in accordance with company documentation. Outcome 3 Carry out steel quality operations. Evidence requirements 3.1 Temperature tests meet company documentation for number and timing. 3.2 Samples sent to laboratory meet company documentation for number and timing. Range Outcome 4 Tundish to mould shrouding device is set up and monitored. Evidence requirements 4.1 Shrouding device is set up in accordance with company documentation. 4.2 Shielding gas is connected, and flows are monitored, in accordance with company documentation. 4.3 Condition of the shrouding device is checked, and in case of poor condition, action is taken in accordance with the company documentation.
