Definitions
On-farm procedures – the verbal and written instructions to staff on procedures for
notification of shearing plant maintenance requirements.
Contractor’s policy – the verbal and written requirements for notification of shearing
plant maintenance requirements.

Safety in Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Identify worn and faulty handpiece components, and install minor repair kit components.
Performance criteria
1.1
A handpiece is stripped and cleaned in accordance with manufacturer’s
specifications.
1.2
Worn and faulty handpiece components are identified in accordance with the
Shearing Handbook, and manufacturer’s specifications.
1.3
Faulty comb beds are identified in accordance with the Shearing Handbook,
and manufacturer’s specifications.
Element 2
Check and evaluate the shearing plant, and notify maintenance requirements.
Performance criteria
2.1
Worn and faulty parts of the shearing plant are identified and described in terms
of their effects on safety and performance.
Range
2.2
The shearing plant is run and checked prior to use, to determine safe
operational performance.

Maintenance requirements of the shearing plant are notified to the shed owner
in accordance with on-farm procedures or contractor’s policy.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
